route planning through nav or app

Just got my '16 340i... I'm trying to figure out how to route play through iDrive OR through the BMW Connect app (iOS).

For example, I'd like to go to a small town 45 miles from here. I can take the interstate, or a couple backroads. The nav seems to default to interstate, or the alternate route isn't exactly what I want.

1. When I send directions from the app, it only sends the address to the car? I can't seem to pick a route.

2. Can't seem to select a route at all in the app?

3. I thought I might be able to send a route from iOS Maps or Google Maps, but seems like I can't?

Any suggestions to getting the right custom route to come up on my nav and HUD?

Thanks

I'm also having troubles with custom routes on my factory navigation unit.

Every time a toll highway (407ETR, I'm looking at you) is available, the navigation automatically defaults to using it. I have tried looking around to find a setting that will avoid toll roads, but I've had no luck.

Does anyone have an answer for this?

on my 13 F30 w/nav and iDrive. Display the map, on left, select "route Preference" and select 'avoid Toll Roads.

So no way to send directions from google maps to the car? Only option is in the BMW Connected app? I swear I saw somewhere mention of sending directions from other apps...

You can use BMW's route planner website: https://www.bmw-routes.com/. Allows you to define a named route with multiple waypoints and send it to your car.

I can't tell your location off the app, but here's the directions to send Google Maps data to your car.

This allows you to send a waypoint to your car through Google. The OP is looking to send a whole route to the car. The BMW route planner doesn't work for the US.

when will the auto industry give up on charging thousands of dollars for inferior navigation systems?? I know, obviously they don't want to, but with carplay and carandroid, there is no reason for anyone to be forced into buying a crap nav system. i understand it if it's a standalone option, but it never is. it's always part of some package or required to order some other bauble.

Wow, I didn't know that. I just tried to make a route in the US and indeed the site refuses to calculate a route or allow you to download it to a USB stick.

However if you make a route with several waypoints in Europe, you can download the file. It's a zip file with a tar.gz archive inside which has an XML document. There might be a chance to edit the file manually and insert waypoints in the US, and upload that file to the car. Not sure it would work as it seems the XML file has not only destinations but also a lot of waypoints along the route to force navigation to use a particular road. However a simple file with only a few destinations might simply trigger the car to navigate there.

If there's no other way, maybe that's a semi-manual workaround to get routes into the car.

There is an app called LEAD THE WAY that enables you to devise a route using Google Maps and then transfer the route via USB Stick to the car. It works best in the USA.
