I actually love the large grills. It means thereís less painted surface area on the cover so rock chips from the increasingly shitty road maintenance is less visible

I hated the IS before I bought one, and then it grew on me a bit, but only because the car was black, and I think they do it better than everyone else. Still just tragic IMO.

It's funny how all these big companies bend over backward to the Chinese.

I'm cool with the X7, but there's no defending the LCI 7er or forthcoming 4-series/M3/M4.

Yes but those are big ass grilles for big ass trucks. My Chevy crew cab grilles looks tiny in comparison since the truck is so big.

I think bmw's strategy is to sandbag the grille size in their concepts... like they do this ultra ridiculous-sized grille to ground ourselves to a certain size, then launch a ridiculous-sized one, which by comparison with the concept is not that bad.

After Toyota "redesigned" their Lexus grilles, they migrated to the Toyota brand. The Avalon (IMO) could be worst ever. How could a designer stand back & say. "Yep, Finished....that's the look I was shooting for"

The Avalon doubles as a street sweeper, apparently.

Wait it gets better, check production line for the new 4-series - enormous grills with HORIZONTAL fins . At this point I actually prefer Lexus grill, at least it looks decent on some models like LC or NX.

I don't know why people complain about Lexus grilles; they look ok IMO especially on their coupes. I think BMW's problem is trying to incorporate huge grilles on their iconic old kidneys while other manufacturer just start brand new designs of big grilles. If BMW is so obsessed with big grilles they were better off just abandoning the kidney style grilles as oppose to making the kidney grilles huge. They just look silly.

I still want to know, if BMW Designers think that these ridiculously large grills are good design, why did they not put them on their signature 8 series? Is there a grownup somewhere in the BMW corporate family?

Quandt Family.
They still pull major string with BMW.
Betcha they suggested the bigger grills for the Asian market.

The 8 series was originally designed just as BMW was rolling out the first huge grill on the 7 series.

I counter with this

So I like the "thin" lines across the front of cars, which to me seems more futuristic and fashionable. While some of these still have big gaping intakes (ok, the 5-10 radiators of the camaro), there is an effort to make a thin top line usually that aligns with the headlights...and I think that looks pretty damn good. The giant tall intakes, especially the ones that are mostly just dark solid plastic, are one of the dumbest things ever IMO. Most cars don't giant gaping intakes and those high performance cars come with a big cost in the form of drag, vs. the ones that look big but are simply dark plastic. This needs to stop IMO.
