Oil filter housing gasket

I noticed oil on my garage floor. I saw oil on my oil filter housing so cleaned it. Turned the car on and I heard an air sound. The oil was back and the bottom of my engine was full of it.

Try tightening the oil filter down to 18.4 lbs of tq. That seems like a lot of oil for it to be the gasket. Especially if you cleaned it up and that happened instantly. If that doesn't work. Then replace the ofhg and oil cooler gasket at the same time. Good luck

Wow!

Looks like catastrophic failure of the gasket to the oil cooler.

I know the gasket is like $30-$40. How much do you guys think for labor?

The labor will require removal of the intake manifold.

Oil filter housing gasket

From a dealer, I'd expect it to be in the range of $1000-1200 (based on my recollection of the quote I got a while back). How many miles on the car?

Also, if the oil cooler gasket has also failed, you might need a coolant flush as well. Check your coolant expansion tank to see if there's any oil/sludge floating in there.

If you're getting the oil filter housing gasket done, do the oil cooler one at the same time.

By oil cooler one, you're referring to both gaskets, right?

Yep. Do both gaskets.
- between oil filter housing and engine
- between oil filter housing and oil cooler

You'll have the oil filter housing out anyway, so will be quick and easy to do the oil cooler gasket while you're there.

Curious to see if this ends up being the oil cooler gasket or just the oil filter cap not tightened down/installed correctly...seems like too much oil for a leaky gasket.

That oil buildup is definitely NOT just your OFHG leaking though, although it probably needs replacing too, ya know, bc BMW.

Dropped car off this morning. Hopefully will know something soon. If it's the oil filter housing gasket they told me they would change the oil cooler gasket as well for $300. Plus they would do an oil change for $70. Total $370.

Did this job in about 3 hours. OEM gaskets were like $50. Easy peasey job and learned a lot.

wow , mine failed at 29-30Km (aprox) , very similar if the issue is OFHG/cooler like yours.

Here in Monterrey-Mexico, dealership has these items aprox in USD :

11428637821 and 11428637820 - $798 pesos - 39.88 USD each one = 79.76 USD (both - tax included)
and labor (not in dealership ) aprox 100USD.

No, they are not dealer rates. I am friends with a master mechanic at the bmw perfomance center. He does side work for me. He replaced the oil cooler gasket and oil filter housing gasket. We ended up having to replace the belt and pulley as well because oil was all over it. The pulley was making a hissing sound. He charged me $500 for parts and labor.

That's a really good price. I paid my mechanic to do just the oil housing gaskets and an oil change for $700. I called the dealer to see how much they wanted and they wanted $2400 just to replace the gaskets.

That picture sure seems to make it appear that the leak was coming from the filter cap. It wouldn't make sense for the oil to fill those voids if the OFHG was leaking. If the OFHG was leaking that badly, oil would be everywhere and creating pools under the car.

There are two OFHGs. The OFHG between the housing and engine block is the one that tends to leak the worst and there's NO WAY it would pool oil there. It's physically impossible. The other OFHG is between the main oil filter housing and the front oil filter housing plate. In order for that gasket to leak into that area would require a pretty obvious leak and at the top of the gasket, not the bottom. For that amount oil depicted, it seems very very unlikely.

When you saw this oil accumulation, how long had it been since your last own change? It sure looks to me like the oil filter cap was leaking and dumping oil into the depicted areas, especially since you were hearing a vacuum leak.
