Question Rear tail light socket corrosion

Hi all,

So randomly, my left rear brake light starts having intermittent brake light bulb malfunction, sometimes it would work, sometimes it would not, but then it just stopped working altogether. The bulb looks good, but when I tried to remove the bulb, I had a bit of trouble, it felt stuck and I had a hard time twisting it to remove.

When I finally did, I saw this... the light bulb socket contact is corroded and so was the tip of the bulb.

Anyone seen this before or know what could have caused it? Will I have to fix the whole housing unit?

Thanks!

It's caused by a loose bulb fit, which results in arcing. You probably need to replace the socket assembly. It may be possible to clean the contact but there's not much room to get at it.

Thanks for the reply. Arcing will cause the tip of the bulb to melt/disfigure as well?

Yes, it will. What you're seeing on the contact is probably material that came from the bulb tip, just as an arc welder deposits material from the welding rod to the work.
