I started to go this route with my 2015 435i GC with MPE, but instead got the JB4 so I just control the flap through the steering wheel. Once I got my downpipe, the MPE exhaust got EXTRA loud, and leaving that valve open sounds even louder and more awesome ! I keep it open most of the time unless I want to quiet down my loud start a bit

Yea I ended up putting mine back on. I might go with the JB4 down the line because I would like the option to close it. I haven't fully convinced myself on the JB4 yet since I don't think I would have any other mods besides maybe an intake. I still think I would go with the JB4 over the stage 1 though.

Is this still applicable for the LCI cars? I checked my 340, and this is what I'm seeing:

- engine cold - valve is open
- start engine - valve closes
- drive in manual mode, close to work, try to keep the revs below 2k, back into stall, valve is still open
- drive in comfort / D, really light on the throttle, park the car, and it's still open

Just wondering if something changed in the LCI? Does it just operate on the cold engine and then open up the rest of the time? Or is it that I have m-sport with adaptive suspension that things change. Just wondering...

I believe it's the same. I don't know what you mean by the difference between 'engine cold' and 'start engine', but here's what's suppose to happen:
  • When you first start your car, the valve will close for 1-2 minutes.
  • After 1-2 minutes the valve will remain open.
  • The valve will continue being open unless you are in comfort/eco pro mode and at cruising speeds (above 10 mph or something, keep your windows open and you can hear the valve change.)
  • Once you come back to a full stop, you will hear the valve open again.
  • If you go WOT in any mode, the valve will open again.
  • In Sport/Sport+, valve will always be open.

So basically, the only time the valve is closed is during the first minute or two during the engine start and at any moving speed in comfort/eco pro where you are not flooring it. Otherwise, it will be open in all other cases.

Ok, makes sense. I drive in sport mode almost exclusively, and never was listening during comfort mode.

Re-reading what I typed, I'm not sure what I meant by engine cold either (I think it was meant to be "closes if the engine is cold and you start it".

With jb4, just hold the PS button on steering wheel in for 3 seconds and let go. Blinker will flash indicating open, closed, and OEM operation

My exhaust flap has been squeaking recently, so I will definitely be removing the connection to the motor soon. I don't hear any squeaking in comfort/eco, which is why I'm blaming the exhaust flap.

I think the 340i opens and closes the exhaust flap in sport+/sport after the engine is warm. I hear distinct, loud squeaks when letting on or off the throttle in parking garages. It's a lot of work for that silly little flap to be doing.

Does anyone know if the flap is actually completely closed and sealed when it is in the closed position?

I have mine unplugged with it open currently, but I'm thinking of doing a bit of custom exhaust work by cutting the valve section out and moving it to the end of a exhaust cutout pipe just before the muffler. Then I can use a valve controller like the VSC-2 to open and close the flap (switching between muffler delete and stock-w/flap open).

The downfall would be if the flap doesn't stay fully sealed.

On my 2015 435i I found the best way is to put it into sport, have someone rev it while you got your head and hand down there and when it opens quickly unplug it. Mine didn't stay open in sport. Only when giving it the beans.

I read through this and was wondering- has anyone learned anything definitive about possible damage being caused to the car / exhaust / catalytic converter by forcing the flap to remain open all the time? The only thing I discovered was that it's purpose is there to help the car warm up quicker and for less noise when desired.

I unclipped the actuator from the flap and secured it open yesterday and have enjoyed the "full sound" but want to make sure this is not hazardous to the car, in which case i will clip it back on.

*I'm not concerned about warming my car up as I'm in Florida where its 1000 degrees outside, plus I enjoy taking a minute or two (especially in the mornings)

I looked this up. Looks like a really nice product with a ton of features. For the time being I still wonder if having the flap permanently open can adversely affect the vehicle in any way

Many aftermarket exhausts omit the flap. If you run your car in Sport or Sport+ mode the flap is open virtually all the time. If there was any adverse effect of a slightly freer flowing exhaust, a silly thought really, BMW probably wouldn't program it into its software.

Do this on a car with PPF and you will get an EML and a code that says "total OPF failure" plug it back in and after 500 miles or so the EML light goes out but the code remains.

Ask me how I know.
