I like to change the oil midway through the dealership maintenance schedule....approx. every 5-6k miles. Late last summer when I went to change it again and went to the dealership to buy the BMW (Shell) 5w-30, I was informed they were out as BMW now uses 0W-30. So I asked the guy at the parts counter (who I know) what he thought of the change as he drives an F10 with N55, JB4, FBO. Said he car now eats a quart every 3k miles because it's so thin but BMW went that direction due to normal MPG pressure from the gub.
So I didn't buy and went on in search of Shell Euro 5W-30 which is LL01 but only to find out it is only offered (in the US at least) in 55 gallon drums. Maybe that has changed but I have yet to see any of it in a 5-qt or qt bottle. So I ended up going with Shell Euro 0W-40. The lack of LL01 certification drove me crazy but I convinced myself to move forward with it due to the certification it carried for MB, Porsche, and the two VW specs that are usually also listed on oils that carry the LL01 cert. Soooooooooo, I thought if it meets these same specs for the other mfg's that LL01 oils also meet then I can't be doing any harm to the engine by using it. After reading the thread which is basically a freshening of a much discussed topic, I am hopeful that the Shell Euro 0W-40 gets LL01 soon just to pacify my brain. The car ran great with the oil but the lingering question persists.....is this oil actually good enough even though it meets these other high performance specs. Ugh! |

I change it every 5,000 miles so I'm not worried if it's not the absolute best snake oil available. |

I did consider the Castrol as I've been using that in my E39. I guess it's because I've boughten into the Shell PurePlus gas to oil as having superior lubricating and thermal characteristics. At least that seems to be how it's marketed. Plus, BMW has switched to it (maybe only due to price idk).

A side effect of using that drain plug is that you won't have an accurate picture of what metals are in your oil. So if it's shedding a lot of metal you might not be aware since it won't show up in the report and your drain plug is catching it.

I have to add a quart of oil to my car... I used liqui molly at the oil change and I don't want to order another 5L just for 1 quart. If the weight is the same can I use a different brand

Technically, it "probably" won't hurt as long as it's a synthetic of the same grade, but I personally wouldn't want to make a habit of it. I always like to have extra in case I need to add some in between oil changes. Have you noticed any difference using the Liqui Moly?

I often had to top off my oil between oil changes with warranty oil change. Once I switched to royal purple my car stopped needing top offs between oil changes.

I use Castrol 0W-40 and I found it to last longer than BMW Shell product from the dealer. Generally my car burns a 1/2 quart to a quart at around 8K miles with the Castrol. With the BMW LL oil I was burning a quart as early as 5K miles. Basically the BMW oil was breaking down sooner. I stick to Castrol and 8K or so oil changes.
