Enjoying my 2014 328D with 40+ mpg

Its fun to drive !!!

I have got 9k + in 5 months as I use it for my work commute from San Jose to SFCity everyday.

I am satisfied with the mpg. Only issue with this car is slipping gears. I have felt it many times . Has anyone seen/experienced it ?

I had one as a loaner yesterday. That little oil burner can scoot. The trans programming is seamless. It's like a continuous flow of power until you reach cruising speed. Add to that I was able to get 40 MPG without trying.

OP, thanks for the tread. It's been a few months since taking delivery. What are your thoughts now on the 328d? What has been your average MPG?

Thanks in advance.

I'm in a similar situation as my 328d xDrive is due to arrive in Port (NY/NJ) in a few days. YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY

So I am also looking forward to seeing an update from the OP now that it is a few months later.

A couple of additional thoughts. I was impressed enough with the new 3-series, that I leased another F30 in February, a 335i. Now, I really do have the 2 ends of BMW 3 series engineering with the diesel and the 35i. I'm honestly *more* impressed with the 328d having spend considerable time with both. The element that continues to put a smile on my face is the performance in everyday driving. It just moves. The torque is so consistent and across such a broad range, the 328d performs exceptionally well around town and off the line, especially with the 8-speed ZF transmission. The only time I really notice any difference is on the highway and passing from say 60 to 90mph. Floor the 335i in these conditions, and its instant. The 328d does lag a bit in this one circumstance. Really, just ignore the stated performance numbers of the 328d. In real-life driving, its as good as its petrol-fueled brothers.

I've had no other issues with the 328d, its got about 4000 miles on it now. It's been my wife principle car, and she unequivocally states its the finest car she's ever owned or driven.

Our driving is a bit unusual. I spend weekdays at my work location, 120 miles from where we live and were I spend weekends. I'm doing a 240 mile round trip at least twice a week, sometimes more. In these conditions, with roughly 70/30 highway/city driving, we've been averaging about 42mpg with the F31 328d; the F30 335i in these conditions gets about 27mpg.

I do think the 328d F31 wagon is as close to a no-compromises car as you can buy. No one car is perfect. Every car is a trade-off between performance, handling, safety, mileage, hauling ability, comfort, and price. Of the roughly 60 cars I've owned over the years, this car covers a wider span of that spectrum than any other. Just a fabulous auto.

I couldn't agree more. I've had my 328d Msport wagon for about 4 months now, and this is the first car I've had in 10+ years that I feel I could keep for the long term (or until BMW or Audi bring a performance wagon stateside). In everyday driving, the little diesel has plenty of torque and such a smooth delivery of power, it really is impressive. Even in mildly spirited driving it provides a solid feeling of power. Other than highway passing at speed, as you mentioned, the only time it feels down on power is when I'm pushing it on some of the NW backroads. Essentially, when driving it on a scale from 1/10 to 6/10 it's killer... when driving from 7/10+ it starts to feel a bit weak. That said, you can still push it really hard and get 25+ mpg. Obviously this wasn't intended for that kind of driving, but it can still put a smile on your face. I will say that the Q5 TDI also made me grin due to the massive torque, but the rest of the package left quite a bit to be desired.

My daily commute is about 80% city and i'm getting approx 34mpg. On trips to the coast (which is going up over mountain passes) i'm at 48-51mpg.

In the last few years we've owned a number of BMW's (135, 328ix, 335i) and Audi's (A4 Avant, A6, S4, S5), along with various other domestics and imports and this is by far my favorite car. The overall package really comes together extremely well. I think the diesel just helps give it that extra bit of character. While I still love driving our S5, I'm always anxious to get back to the 328d.

My complaints about it? Only two really... one is that it takes a lot longer to get up to temp vs gas vehicles, so for relatively short commutes it's not heating up too awful quick inside. The other is that I find it so unfortunate even when you get the Msport the suspension sits quite high. I think BMW nailed it with this combo.

When I need some quick power to pass at 60+ mph I toggle into M/S. Putting it into "S" drops down a gear and that's usually enough. If "S" (with Sport AT) doesn't get me there I put it into "M" and drop down a gear. The torque is there, it just needs to be accessed.

That's quite a hill you live on, Diablo!

New 328d Wagon

As many others have attested I too am enjoying my new 328d Xdrive wagon. My first BMW and has been a big change from my XC90. As someone who is 6'5" it is a well designed car for tall people and still has a usable back seat. Fuel economy is also quite nice and performance in Sport Mode is a lot of fun; but then again I am likely easy to please given my previous car.
