Cracked Windshield
In an example of Murphy's Law at work, I was on the freeway in my three day old 335i and took a rock to the windshield. The result -- an 8" crack that has stopped growing...for now. A quick check with the dealer says $900 plus labor to replace -- ouch! Next call -- insurance. I'm waiting for them to confirm coverage.

^^ I wish a repair would work, but the crack is already 8" and growing.

My wife had a golf ball hit her windshield on her 328i. Called Safelite auto glass and it was about $550. Did not file a claim through insurance. I have the windshield insurance on my 328I and of course nothing has happened to it in 23000 miles.

I had my window changed on my BMW135. All covered under my insurance and the new window was perfect. You couldn't tell it wasn't the original window. The local BMW dealer ordered in the part and had it installed by an outside contractor they bring in for the window installs. Results were great.

Too funny to read this thread. After living in Denver for a decade and doing the annual ritual of windshield replacement, I had gone 14 years and 6 cars in California without a cracked windshield.
A few weeks ago I hop into my car at work to head home, look over at the passenger side of the windshield and I'm like WTF? Nice 12" crack. When I got home, I looked and there was a tiny rock chip, almost too small to notice. Really surprised this caused it to crack, but glad I keep all my cars at $100 deductible for comp. Jimbo |

If you had HUD then just the glass is gong to run about $600. Add on rain sensor and moulding if they need to replace that and you'll be pushing $900.
BMW wanted $1400 to replace mine but I just had it replaced for around $1k. Or that's what they charged my insurance anyway. HUD windshields are roughly twice as expensive as the regular glass. |

Not all auto insurance includes glass coverage. For me in PA it was an extra couple of bucks a year to get a 0 deductible glass policy. Without it a claim would go against my regular deductible.

Whoa whoa whoa, was it just me that had been quoted $6000 for a windshield with HUD, rain sensor, and lane departure (without labor)??
I didn't pay it out of pocket, but that's what BMW quoted me just for the windshield part. Insurance covered the windshield and Safelite installed it, but when I talked to both the BMW dealer and Safelite, the windshield did come out to be $6000 dollars since I wanted the ConnectedDrive logo to remain on the windshield.

Well, I do know that they asked the HUD question and lane departure questions separately when they quoted the replacement cost. With the HUD and no lane departure, it was $900+labor, so I guess lane departure add a big chunk to the cost. Ouch!
I am getting the new windshield Friday, so if anything changes, I will post it here. I wish I knew how big the rock was, but that must be one thin windshield.

I don't get the new one for a few days, but I don't expect it to say that. That seems to be an expensive logo!

To the guy with the $6k bill. That's just ridiculous. The oem glass with fancy BMW logos and whatnot was substantially more expensive than the glass without when I looked but not $5k, more like a few hundred bucks, which is still ridiculous but standard. On my ford pick up the glass with the Fx4 logo was about $200 more than the glass without. That's pretty huge considering the glass without was less than $300 total. |

Do you guys plan to actually pay out of pocket for this? I have always made insurance claims since this falls under comp and does not impact rates.

The Connected Drive logo only means you have a specific forward-looking camera setup in your car (it comes with the car if you have the Speed Limit Info, Lane Keep Assist, Pedestrian/Vehicle detection, etc...). The HUD definetely makes it more expensive as I had to replace the glass on my 2012 328i when it was only a few months old and it cost roughly $1,600 (no aftermarket alternative at the time and insurance was paying anyways so it didn't matter to me). Regardless, no windshield (except, perhaps, one for a Ferrari or something with some outrageous bends) should cost upwards of $5-$6k. Thats crazy!
