Starting in second gear

With the 8SP auto in manual mode in a 335i, I was wondering if it's bad to take off in M2 gear vs M1. I find the first gear way too short and generally useless. But am I doing any damage? The engine has so much torque that starting in second in city driving doesn't seem to be an issue.

by default, the automatic transmission starts off in 2nd gear (when in normal drive)

so no, its not an issue taking off in M2

Really? I wasnt aware of this. Will have to count the shifts when in Comfort mode. Does it matter which tranny the vehicle is equipped with i.e. Standard auto vs. Sport auto.

Ummmm, no! It doesn't cause any unusual wear (..and I said most of the time, not all of the time; example...if I don't come to a complete stop). I've looked at my E92 M3's clutch, for example, when it was being CPO'd after I traded it in. Although they changed it (..it was being CPO'd), it was in great condition.......with 42k on the odometer. My clutches last a longgggggggg time! My E90 330i had 30k miles on it when I traded it in, and I also saw the clutch on that car. No excessive wear. My driving habits haven't changed throughout the years.

I think ECO PRO de tunes the car to the 320i level, is this possible? I love it on the highway, and in mixed traffic i get about 30mpg

Maybe in theory, but my clutches say otherwise. It hasn't damaged a clutch in 18 years of driving, sooooo......!

P.S. Like I said, I start in 2nd during "rolling stops", and no, I don't ticket for rolling stops.

Because they lasted 42,000 miles? They should last triple that if taken care of.

How does this burn out your clutch? If your car has enough torque, there's no reason you couldn't take off in 2nd gear. I do it quite a bit and have done so on every car prior which have each seen at least 100K miles.

My point was that, after 42k, my clutch looked great. As for how long they should last and how long they actually do last, that all depends on driving behavior. Conversely, my ex-g/f in her 2011 328i M Sport went through a clutch and a set of pads by 35k miles.

^^This!

I know people driving around torque monsters that always start in 2nd gear, especially on rainy days.

You have to ride the clutch a lot more to get car rolling in second. Only makes sense. Congrats to you two.

1st is only for burnouts with the auto boxes. Starting the 6MT in 2nd isn't going to destroy the clutch in a car with low end torque like the 335. At least it won't if you're not spinning the hell out of the motor whilst slipping the clutch for an extended period of time.

Second gear is perfectly fine for accelerating again after a rolling "stop." But this is not starting off.

I assume you use first gear from a full, actual stop. Starting in second from a full stop is a bit harder on the clutch, but not abusive if you are gentle and get off the pedal quick.

Whether the car has the power necessary to move the car is not the issue. My Z06 will easily start from a dead stop in sixth gear. This does not mean it is good for the clutch to do so.

Many autos start in second by default. It is smoother and, of course, does not hurt the tranny.

Doesnt have anythiing to do with torque. Clutch needs to be slipped/ridden much longer to get car rolling in second . Its basic M/T 101. I thought this place was full of enthusiasts.
