Agree, I'm not knocking the new 335i at all!

I think conditions and the driver have a lot to do with it. The 335is has done 0-60 in 4.5 seconds in the right conditions so that still bests the 5.1 time.

Regardless, performance on the new 335i appears to be improved and albiet better gas mileage to boot with the nice exterior, interior, sound et al. Cudos to BMW for improving the sedan.




I like the coupe like sporty coupe like front end (I'm not a sedan person though) and the exhaust note is much better. The interior I like but not a fan of the center console are but the cup holders were needed.

German carmag AMS tested an F30 335i sportline 0-62 in 5.1 seconds.

My F30 335i is just as fast as my ex my 2007 N54 335i but even has a better sound/brakes and chassis to it.

Whatever the outcome and until the M3 arrives, or if there's an upgrade of the N55 etc., in this segment the F30 335i sportline is the real sports sedan as BMW advertised.

I didn't say BMW shouldn't make them. Plenty of people drive 4s, I know. Not my cup of tea. Personal preference...

Thats why the make the 335...but for people that dont mind driving a 4 cylinder, its a hell of a car. Everyone that has been in my car is amazed its a 4 cylinder. Especially when its in sport mode.

Question m3 e92 vs 335 f30

I know obviously the m3 is the faster car. but how much? does anyone have the numbers of the m3 so we may compre?

also.. what do you think get this one or wait for the m-sport version (just for the asthetics, yes) but is does look awsome.. what do you think?

0-60 wise, I think 4.3 in the latest C&D head to head with the new AMG C coupe. it still beat the C overall and the C was under 4 secs. i have a feeling the e9x m3 would run circles around an F30 335i on the track

yes of course it is faster, i just wanted to know by how much, and if it is enough to justify my getting a used m3

KevinJ, I think the cold weather of the C/D test may have reduced the grip from the tires. Also, the turbos are not maxed to allow for adjustments with respect to temperature, that is the hotter air would result in less power, but the extra headroom of the turbo is put to use by the DME to allow a consistent level of torque regardless of temperature - think of it as a temperature-dependent boost limiter that increases with temperature. This is why the car works better at higher altitudes than a comparable NA car; the DME can compensate for thinner air by allowing the turbos to spool more than it would at sea level. Of course, there is a limit to this adjustment.

FYI, that 5.1 is 0-100 KMH (62MPH fwiw) and that's still 0.4 seconds better than BMW tells us.

Nice, the 0-100 factory time is 5.7 for the 335i

Again, I'm not ragging on the new 335i. It was fact though that the opening statement pointed that new 335i is as fast as the 335is which is just not true which is what I was pointing out (unless you do torque braking every time that resulted in the time). That won't help you at rolling start or higher speed acceleration.

Also the 335is has 370 Torque overboost.

"This new one actually accelerates at the same pace as the 320-horse, 332 lb-ft 335is -- the one with two turbos and a fast-shifting twin-clutch transmission."

I still question setting a benchmark from just torque braking that makes up for 20HP, 70 Torque, faster DCT shifts and got 0-60 in 4.7 which is an average 0-60 for the 335is.


The factory claim on the 335is for example was;

0-100 km/h (s) or 0-62Mph: 5.3

Compared to factory claim on new 335i

0-100 km/h (s) or 0-62Mph: 5.7

So in this case if someone pulled a 5.1 on the 2012 then that is .6 better than the factory claim. The bottom line is that the new 335i gets the same if not better performance as the old at better MPG which is important.

I found a site that you can add different models to compare general numbers for folks that don't want to qualify and quantify different magazine results:

Just saw something a little funny last night.

I was watching an older Top Gear and they had the older GT500 on the show. They mentioned it had 500 horsepower and could do 0-60 in 4.9s. I'll assume, based on wikipedia that it was the 2007-2009 model. A quick google search confirms the car will do ~4.5s, with a few claiming 4 seconds flat and some claiming 4.9s.

At the time I faintly remembered reading the 335i could do a 4.9s 0-60 time and had to confirm. Wow... I'm surprised to say the least. I guess that extra 200hp is pretty much wasted in the GT500, which is really sad.

It also reminded me of the silly AMG models that have a ton of horsepower, but can never seem to put it down. When Top Gear raced the C63 and the M3, the AMG had a lot of issues actually using its power and lost because of that.

Anyways... carry on.

Good point, when only comparing 0-60, too much HP can hurt if you can't put it down (not going anywhere if the wheels are spinning). Now if you grab that old GT500 and check out quarter mile times, trap speed, passing accel, etc, you have another world to talk about. I bet the new GT500 is fun though, think it's running 0-60 in 4 flat or less and keeps on pulling up to 200 mph apparently. But I guess that's what 660 hp will do for you.

The 335 sure is fun to drive though. While, some say they use the GT500 for every day driving, I'm sure the 335 is easier to live with and can have a bit of fun when the opportunity rises. I wouldnt mind being able to put my foot into a GT500 every now and then though...

Talk about an 18 month bump...you'd be better off with a cheaper and more powerful aftermarket tune rather than BMW's milder, more expensive tune.
