My new 340i x-drove 6MT

Hi all,

Just picked up my 340i x-drive. Ordered it with the track handling package, navigation, 6MT and a few other small options. Also had the dealer install a Dinan midpipe before I picked it up.

Initial impression - wow what a car! I'm coming from a 2013 VW Golf R and had a e90 335is previously. This BMW is hands down the best car I've owned. The 3.0 inline 6 is so sweet and even better than the one I had in my e90. My VW was probably just a powerful after I tuned it, but it wasn't nearly as refined. It had very little power at the low end, but it kicked hard at 2.5k rpm, where as the BMW feels great through the full powerband. The 6MT is very smooth and much easier to drive. Still getting used to the automatic rev matching but think I'm going to like it.

Two quick questions:

- Anyone here get a midpipe/resonator delete and then add a Dinan or M performance muffler after? I like the sound with just the Dinan midpipe, but I though it would be louder.
- To those with 6MT, does your stick/gear selector vibrate in neutral?

Congrats!

1) I have a catless DP, with full AWE exhaust (with midpipe). It's loud as hell and I love it. I'm single with no kids so yea, but it's loud.

2) yes my gear stick does vibrate. A lot more since the mods.

Thanks! Not sure I want to do the downpipe just yet. Had one one my last car and it did drone a little too much.

OP-

Can you post a video (audio the important part) of exhaust revvs in sport mode. There are a number of us here considering staying all OEM exhaust except for Dinan Midpipe, but good quality sound of exhaust note in this config is hard to find.

Is there a way to directly post a video? I only see my photos when trying to include an attachment.

Here's one I took at the dealer. Car was in sport and engine was cold. The drivers side door was open. Send me preference for shot list and I'll take more as soon as I can. I only have an iPhone so apologies if quality isn't great.

Sounds like this video may be prior to the second valve opening up? If it's within a couple minutes of the engine starting, the second valve will not be open regardless of going into sport. This makes a huge difference regarding exhaust note.

Yes this was probably before the valve opened.

Im a lover of the M2 and M3 and have also driven the 328, 335, M240i extensively and many on track
love the real M cars esp
but my 340 always makes me forget those M urges
its just a hairstep lower but
its just so refined and can play nice when needed and rough when we want it to with a few settings
by far one of the best cars Ive ever owned as well
congrats on your new car Im sure your also feelin the joy
