How to "change" how often to change oil?

2018 340i. Got the car in July and the "oil change interval" was set to 9k miles. Do not want that. Put 4.3k on the car and the low oil light went on. Car said to top off the oil by adding a liter but I just went and got it changed the next day (No leaks, just drove it aggressively so it ate through some oil).
Issue: I cannot reset the oil change interval. When I hold the button to the left of the gauge cluster, it prompts me with "9k, Reset Impossible". What can I do to reset this, then set it to 5k. Does this have something to do with resetting the trip computer back to 0? I don't want to mess with any of the other intervals in the menu like brake pads etc.

Please let me know,
Thanks!

my BMW SA advised me to just changed in between the recommended oil change intervals and not to reset it. when I had my oil change (since i still have the mainenance warranty) they set the interval to 12K miles. so when it hits 6K I will do my in between oil change.

You'll need a higher level tool than just your dashboard to set the interval lower... The reset should be able to be done at the dash though. Just google it. These cars use condition based service, the oil quality is monitored by sensors in the engine and will tell you when it needs to be done. Default is 1 yr 10k miles I believe.

BMW has changed the default at various times. Changing oil at 3k-5k mile intervals is best especially if the engine is tuned

My old e90 liked to chug oil. Always carried an extra quart of oil and regularly added oil between service intervals. Haven’t had to add oil between intervals on my F36. How aggressive do you drive?

My car says 9k miles after an oil change when the dealer resets it even though it's coded to 10k miles but I get it changed every 5k miles. I just get it changed when there's 4k miles left.

If you want to change the interval you will have to code it with Esys. There are threads that list what the VO codes are.

Right? If I was missing that much oil, I'd be scouring the engine bay to see where it's going.

Not sure about this. I change my oil around 7500-8000 miles. I've had the oil analyzed by Blackstone 2 or 3 times. They said the oil looked great each time and I could extend the life to around 8500-9000. My 435 does not use oil in that time either.

Should be able to reset the maintenance minder from the dash. I know I do.
