This rack setup topic is driving me nuts. I have used Yakima round bars for years with a fairing and I have a lot invested in them.
I just got the F30 and have been trying to decide if I should stick with the Yakima round bars or go with the OEM ones. I don't like how the Yakima landing pads sit on the roof/paint and I don't like how I have to get all new accessories if I want to use the OEM ones. The round bars are so convenient. Anyone have a close-up of the Yakima landing pad 11 on the f30? Has anyone converted from the round bars to the OEM? How's the sound difference? |

Roof racks never look good on a sedan. That's a wagon's job.
But yeah for bike hauling duty I've always used hitch racks. Way easier to load/unload. I never understood why people would want to put bikes on top of their cars, it just looks so... dangerous. Roof rack is reserved for roof box duty only for me.

Here is my 435i with roof racks. Apologies it isn't an MSport and but I'm working to change that very soon. OEM BMW crossbars and Thule Echelon 518 carriers. Inno fairing in the trunk waiting to go on.

That said, now there are lots of options to hold the bikes by the wheels through a hitch mount so I'm likely going with the Invisihitch: |

Changed my mind, decided to go with an all new roof rack; Thule aero cross bars, Paceline bike trays. Once my daughter starts driving the e46, I'll transfer one of the trays to hold three bikes.
It would have been cheaper to by a new adapter kit for my existing rectangular bars, but the downside of those bars was the noise. It was unbearable to drive through the neighborhood with the sunroof open. So far so good with the new rack, 50 mph wasn't bad at all. I decided against the hitch rack after talking to a few people. I would have been putting the hitch rack on and off the car a lot more vs. leaving this rack on for months. I also needed the ability to carry 3 bikes which I'll have in a few months. As for looks, I think it looks sharp! |

Those of you that have the OEM bars... What's the usable width of the crossbars between the pods? I have a Thule J-rack and SUP holder and I'm trying to make sure I could get both installed with this rack.

Awesome pic! I'm about to make the move on the Thule Aeroblade, but their website recommends 47"..is yours 47"? I see some that look like they extend way over the car and then i see some that look more flush that only hang over a little bit. I was thinking maybe 43" but I want the size of what you have!

How long does it take to put the cross bars on and take them off the car?
I would probably leave them on for the winter to haul skis. I will definitely to take them off in the summer though and only put them back on if I actually need to haul something. |

And yeah, my box is HUGE for this car. It usually sits on an SUV. Unfortunately someone side swiped the SUV and it is in for repair, so "the ski wagon" is in action now, giant roof box and all. |

Added the omni fairing. Needed some bolts from the hardware store to make it compatible with the OEM rack but it works like a charm now.
