Anyone desperate enough to try eco pro ???
With the dreaded fuel shortages happening allegedly- has anyone gone over to using eco-poo mode to try and eke out the last mile??
Tried it many moons ago and found it made zero difference to consumption but seriously affected smiles per gallon

I use it when I am in zero rush on the highway on the right lane following a big rig, with all the time in the world.
Yeah... it happened once.

After two years of sneering at it and enjoying the MPPSK in sport mode way too much, I finally tried in the summer, and to be fair it's actually useful sometimes, and am now finding self using it from time to time! The main advantage imo is it allows you to (one would assume legally) coast. Am sure I've saved more fuel gliding about for miles than with the low RPM/torquey gear change and deadened throttle combined!

Eco pro in the 330e gives a markedly better efficiency and mpg, at a huge cost of performance. If I’m going for a record miles on a tank or cruising on a motorway I’ll use it, otherwise mainly comfort as it’s got decent performance and yet pretty strong regen capabilities when braking.
Love a sport mode on a Friday commute home though, really shows a different side to the car |

I use it quite a bit on the motorway, as a way of justifying driving it like I stole it on the As and Bs.
All joking aside it does make a reasonable difference during the boredom of the unsmart sections. And, I’m fed up now of the fucktards’ panic buying at petrol stations. Same numpties loading their trolleys with big roll and pasta at the start of Covid. |

It’s not a good time to have a failed onboard charger (separate thread). My consumption has dived from infinite on weekends down to 37.6mpg this morning, and every petrol station had queues. Mainly of people who probably didn’t even need to fill up

It’s amazing how much eco pro affects acceleration, for example onto motorways. Foot to the floor, almost not moving. It must be more efficient in those circumstances to switch to comfort or sport and get the acceleration over and done with!

I use EcoPro on regular basis. Not because we have shortages (you get what you ask for...), but because it gives me the most relaxed (i.e. silent) way of driving when I am anyway just cruising. Coasting + better fuel economy come in addition. Why not, when I am anyway driving like an old person for other reasons?
My driving is 65% Comfort, 25% Sport/Sport+, 10% EcoPro. Each has pros and cons and I love taking advantage of what BMW has given us. I do believe EcoPro is often completely misunderstood. People typically try it in the city (or right after trying the other modes, i.e. Sport) and find it retarded. I did so too at first. It is NOT intended for city-driving and it is NOT intended for spirited/dynamic driving. It is however brilliant for cruising on the motorway, especially on long journeys or when you anyway endeavor to drive carefully (due to pets or kids in the car for example).

I use Eco Pro mode more and more these days as I find the drive smoother as the gearbox selects top gear and its a challenge to coast as much as I can. On the drive up to Ellesmere Port last week I compared the fuel consumption with and without Eco Pro and I believe that Eco Pro makes a difference - also my range to empty from a full tank is 500 miles at best [convertible = smaller fuel tank] so conserving fuel on a long run is foremost in my mind as I'm loathed to pay more for fuel than I have to.
All the roads I drive on have speed cameras, I stopped racing between traffic lights in my teens & old age has me doubt the benefits in braking hard for cameras so I drive at or below the limit. I drive a diesel so fortunately no pops or bangs, that noise would annoy the carp out of me - there are enough boy / girl racers where I live that engage light speed with pops/bangs when driving along residential streets - to annoy me as it is. |

I agree, the revs drop right off in eco-pro when going a steady speed on the motorway. You get a scary delay as the revs catch up when you try and overtake.

That's why it's perfect for open motorway cruising when you at a set steady speed on cruise. If you need to overtake, just flick it back into comfort or sport do the manoeuvre and once back in & clear road cruising at a constant speed, flick it back into eco pro to settle it in to save a bit of juice for sport/sport+ on the A roads.

I use it on motorway/dual carriageway when using cruise control. Eco mode makes a big difference to fuel consumption when using aircon.
One thing that I would like to happen is when in eco mode and you put the accelerator to the floor it would automatically go back into comfort or even sport mode. Would probably use it more often then. |

I use it all the time when on motorways/dual carriageways/A9 as it gets better fuel economy for literally zero impact to your drive, I can't see what the problem is with that. From Inverness to Edinburgh the calculator suggests about 15 miles of fuel saved, which granted isn't massive, but that's 30 miles on a round trip and given 43-4mpg on that journey normally would suggest 2/3 gallon of fuel. Add into the mix that I do that journey 10-15 times a year it definitely adds up even if it is only £4 or £5 a time. Of course I flick it into Sport for roundabouts and slip roads etc, but the rest of the time it's not burning fuel it doesn't need to. Winner.
