Brake fluid change - NOT!

Had my car in at the local dealers for MOT, end of warranty check and brake fluid change on Monday.

Had a look over the car today and I'm almost certain the brakes have not been touched. They may have sucked out the reservoir and filled with new, but to my eyes, the bleed nipples are untouched.

What do you reckon?

Unless they've gone to town with the brake clean they do look rather dry! There are also no spanner marks in the corrosion on the nipples which would also suggest they've not been touched.

Got to agree with the above , it is trying to prove it to the service dept though.

And we wonder why you cant see into the workshop when they are working on our cars ,

I would send the excellent pics to the service dept manager and see what they have got to say about the untouched nipples and the fact there is zero moisture in the nipple holes

Look at it this way Sir, at least they didn't shear off the nipples doing the job!

I wonder if the service manager is a gambling man. I’ll offer to pay for another fluid change if they can do it without any nipples breaking. 😁

Did you check if the bleed nipples on the other side of the caliper were also dry?

Not yet, but it’s kind of academic if they didn’t do the front ones. They still half arsed it.

The fronts have bleed nipples on both sides of the caliper. The rears have inside only.

Once the vehicle is on the lift with the wheels still on its easier just to bleed the inner side of the calipers.

Probably too lazy to remove the front wheels to gain full access.

Just had mine done at main dealers and came back with brake fluid around the nipple thread and cap. They also sheared off near side rear nipple and expected me to pay for replacement calliper and labour even though I have extended comprehensive warranty and I had both front callipers replaced due to snapped nipples replaced at 1st fluid change at 3 years under manufacture warranty so why the difference, said not covered due to corrosion. Argued that due to dissimilar metals seizure was inevitable over time As dealer wouldn’t budge asked that they request goodwill from BMW due to loyal customer for 30 years, 3 days later BMW agreed to cover all costs👍

When mine went in for the brake fluid and final check before warranty ran out they sent me a video of it in progress. No snapped nipples either

Official BMW procedure for M-Sport front brakes is to leave the wheels on and access the outer set of nipples through the wheel spokes.

Sounds like an absolute ball ache. Probably why it didn't get done…

Seeing stuff like this absolutely boils my pee. I was about to take mine in 3 weeks ago and resorted to marking the bleed nipples for this exact reason...

Thankfully I came to my senses and did it myself despite never been keen on doing it as I've not got a pressure bleeder. There's absolutely no chance they've changed the fluid, you can still see the residue on mine after 2 weeks and that was after a crap load of brake cleaner.

Could be worse, an Indy Merc garage failed to tighten bleed nipple up one time and it leaked fluid all over the wheel and needless to say trashed the alloy. In fairness to them held their hand up, bought a brand new alloy and were super apologetic.

Dry as a bone - there's no way the brake system has been properly purged via the callipers.

I'd raise a formal complaint with BMW UK. To charge for work that hasn't been performed is fraud. Plain and simple.

This sounds like one serious dry nipple situation!

I am much much happier dealing with a local indy in my area ... you feel that he is on the same side as you & offering decent advice

I hate anyone other than myself working on my car. I only use the dealer for warranty/goodwill reasons. I know you don’t need to use the dealer to maintain the warranty, but I’m sure it’s taken into consideration for goodwill etc.

I particularly wanted the dealer to do the brake fluid because of the relatively common occurrence of broken nipples. I suspect an Indy would struggle to get new callipers under the warranty.

I’ll be having a chat with the service manager on Monday.

That's mental. They charge a daft amount and then do a half arsed job, yet have the audacity to call themselves 'premium'.

Spoke to the service manager, and they’re going to review workshop camera footage to see exactly what was/wasn’t done. I’ll hopefully have an update later today.

Seemed to take it seriously.
