Leather cleaning (inc steering wheel)

Any recommendations on what is the best cleaner.

Especially want to give the steering wheel a clean - too much hand sanitiser getting in to it!!!

Any advice / recommendations appreciated!

+1 for dr leather. Could use the fluid with a gentle brush to clean it properly first time and then buy the wipes, I use them every couple of weeks and they've kept the wheel looking like new with the nice matte finish.

Have you had the car from new? You need to be aware there is a chance that the first properly clean will reveal the leather to be f**led and you'll start stripping off the coating and end up with a greeny finish and a bit of a mess. This is what happened to mine, BMW have a poor reputation with their steering wheel leather and when I tried to clean mine the only thing keeping it black and glossy was all the crap.

Also avoid anything that claims to nourish, moisturise or otherwise treat the leather; automotive leather has so many layers of protective coating applied it's impossible to get through to the actual hide, so products like that will just sit on top and likely attract more dirt.

Gentle use of a 'magic sponge' gets rid of the taxi gloss steering wheel look.

Dr Leather Advanced Cleaner & Conditioner Wipes **40 WIPE TUB**FOR CAR, SOFA, HANDBAG ETC** https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00DU7LZ...5ZZ34M899GBPSZ

These? I want to keep the matte effect on my new wheel as long as possible, which isn't being helped by the use of hand sanitizer!

Dr Leather wipes. Although I have found you get a better finish and less residue if you wipe with a damp cloth afterwards, not a dry one as per the instructions.

Would strongly recommend not using a "magic sponge" as these can easily destroy the coating on the wheel.

The stock leather used on the F series cars is shite, and it's very, very easy to really fuck it up using the wrong things.

I wouldn't use a magic sponge personally, I've found that they can damage without much rhyme or reason (fine on some items and then damage something else)

Interesting, definitely found the residue can get a bit annoying as it seems to dry very quickly before you can wipe it off. Will try with a damp cloth thanks for the tip

Dodo juice supernatural leather cleaner and then their sealer.

It's good enough that a Gtechniq accredited detailer local to me used that over others.

another vote for dr leather wipes. In the past I have tried countless expensive cleaning options - with these wipes I get the same result and super easy to use

+1 ^

I bought a 3 series from new with an M-Sport wheel and followed suggestions about using a balm to treat the leather. I used Autoglym cleaner and balm. All it did was made the wheel shiny and sticky after 3 years.

When I bought my new 4 series I was determined not to make the same mistake. I now use Gtechniq tri clean and leather guard. Two and a half years later, It keeps the wheel with a Matt finish and is much better. It is also great for the seats, also maintaining the Matt finish.

Personally, I would advise against using a balm after it has been cleaned, and just use a sealer.

There are a number of good products from the likes of GTechniq and Gyeon amongst others, but for me, Dr Leather wipes (for maintenance) and their liquid cleaner and a soft brush for a deep clean are hard to beat.

You’ll find water (aka damp microfibre) is just as good as most products

Someone over on Detailingworld found that supernatural cleaner stripped colour on their BMW wheel and Dodo responded to say it's actually quite a strong cleaner, so probably worth being careful.

FWIW I tend to use the Dr Leather cleaner wipes once every few weeks on the white interior leather and then occasionally on the wheel with just a damp microfibre the rest of the time.

+1 Magic sponge is actually a fine abrasive material... that's the 'magic' part. Last thing I'd be getting near my car. May as well use some 0000-grade wire wool instead

I would not use a magic sponge I used one once and it nearly went through the leather before I noticed what it was doing, I was trying to remove a blue stain in the rear bench seat that has gone into the merino leather as the individual stuff is semi aniline.

Use any decent leather cleaner I'd recommend Swissvax leather cleaner and a soft clean shoe brush (to agitate the cleaner) and one damp microfibre cloth (to lift off the dirt) and a dry one (to dry)

They do a kit and their stuff is brilliant.

https://www.theultimatefinish.co.uk/...-care-kit.aspx

Or just the leather cleaner if you have the rest
