As the title says, the outer surround seems to have faded and looks chalky.

Any suggestions as to what to rejuvenate them with ? Amourall?

Not that. Avoid it at all costs. The white discoloration is caused by janky cleaning/protecting products.

"Back to Black" is okay, but most products don't last. Re-dying the plastic is long term.

thanks for the response, a few friends that ive mentioned it to have given me various responses, from using a heat gun on it, to shoe polish, i dont know i might have a look at that back to black cheers!

I've never treated mine, and they look like that.

I've put Mequiar's Vinyl and Plastic treatment on other plastic / rubber parts and they always look great. Never think of those sills until days afterwards, so they look like junk.

i thought someone was going to come forward with some amazing home recipe i can concont in a matter of minutes , like mix a teaspoon of baking soda with vaseline and a pinch of vinegar or something to that effect... lol

I would start with giving it a good cleaning with a GENTLE all purpose cleaner designed for car interiors, not something like Simple Green or Purple Power. That stuff is too harsh. After a good cleaner I'd put a vinyl protectant on it like Meguiars Natural Shine Interior Protectant or similar.

If that doesn't work, I'd step up to something like the Wipe New Billfitz suggested. I recommend the product I use, but it's no longer available.

I have always after washing the car, wiped down and dried this part of the car. I then usually once a month or at least ever other month go over the rubber on the door jams and the plastic door sills and similar areas in the trunk with chemical guys or adams plastic or rubber protector solution. I have used other products too and with all my cars I have not any issues with these parts.

Is this from traditional wax on the plastic? I know the old style waxes would get on porous plastic or rubber areas and give them a chalky appearance.

Ceramic coating works wonders on restoring plastic. Id test it on a small section if you have some handy. Otherwise ready / painting are your best options.

Judging by what looks like water spotting I'd say it's caused by whatever he's washing the car with.

This stuff works very well on black rubber and vinyl trim. I use it on the rubber trim below the rear widows and on the side of the windshield.
