Smog Check Time?

Hey guys, here in SoCal (LA), and my 2014 335 is due for a smog test. I've got 90 days on a temp registration from my lease buyout, but would like to be up to date ASAP.

I'm curious if anyone knows a shop that's, uh, for lack of a better word, "friendly" for us non-stock intake & downpipe folks.

I'm willing to drive out of LA (anything between SD and SB) to handle this.

Any help will be met with lots of karma, and possibly a referral fee. Please PM me with any friendlies you may know, or text 847-nine-eight-oh - 0720.

Thanks guys!

How is your 2014 due for a smog check? The first check is not until after 6 years.

Oh ok. Not true. Check the DMV website it tells the truth. Registration could be due but not a smog check.

dealer is insisting...

because the car was sold to me the transfer of title per CA law says any car transferred that is more than 4 yrs old needs it unless it's to a spouse or another immediate family member.

Build date is 4?15-2014, and i bought it last month. the car isn't 4 years old if you go by actual calendar years but it is if you go by model year. This is turning into a Total CA-style bureaucratic marriage-go-round.

Either way a shop would be good to get leads on in case there was a rule change

The smog check is done by odb port now there is no tail pipe device. If you're not getting check engine codes it may be fine but don't quote me. If your down pipe is catless that could be a different story. You can try going back to stock first. If you have a jb4 those are carb certified in CA now.

Yah, I know. I'd like to avoid the swap in, swap out though.

Any help is appreciated, thank you.

This is true in regards to selling of a car. It is the burden of the seller to have a smogged car. Maybe I'm not understanding something--isn't the dealer transferring the title to you?

That's correct. It is their issue but they didn't tell me ahead of time that it was needed so I didn't swap out anything before I went in to sign the purchase agreement.

So, I handled everything paperwork wise except the smog and they gave me a temp registration to buy time for them to file the paperwork with the state, and they'd reimburse me for the smog check. Make sense?

Yeah, makes sense, however, unless it says on the purchase agreement that the buyer (in your case) has to provide smog certification I question the legality of that. I've bought and sold cars and from my experience there is a legal side and an "agreement" side. If it doesn't say you need a smog and you have purchased the car then it is yours--I don't know what kind of BS this is.

I doubt an intake will affect much. The downpipe MIGHT if it's catless. Take it to a shop and have them do a preliminary check for you. For a small fee, many will do it to let you know if it'll pass or not.

All my cars have had different intakes and they don't reallly care; it's the OBD diagnostics that they seem to be most interested in......(and this was for 1996 vehicles...my BMWS won't need smog for a bit.) We bought my wife's X3 a year ago and we didn't have to have it smogged either time. (it's a 2012) and we've already renewed it.
