Rear Diff Pinion Seal
Just got the 3 series MOT'd and passed but with an advisory for rear diff leak. The guy who tested said it was the pinion seal for the prop shaft and not difficult to change.
I know I need a special tool for the large nut, which I’ve found on eBay for £35. Has anyone done there’s and any tips? I won’t be doing it until the new year so will ensure the diff is filled with oil in the mean time. |

Be careful when you do the big pinion nut back up. Assuming diff design hasn’t changed, there’s a crush spacer behind the pinion flange, and it’s essential you don’t crush it anymore than it is currently. You’ll mess up the diff if you do.
Use a centre punch to mark the relative positions of the nut and the flange, before you loosen the nut, and make sure the dots line up when you put it back together. You can’t just do the nut up tight, or to a specific torque setting. |
