My 2014 335d Touring melted its exhaust manifold this summer as the egr cooler died and sent hot exhaust gases through the manifold.

Fixing this cost £2400

BMW said I was nothing to do with them and it was just wear and tear.

Yesterday I received my recall letter!

Symptoms
Low coolant, nope
Engine managemet light- yep
Loss of power- yep
Smell of ehaust gasses- it was pouring in through the air vents
Smoke from Engine- Loads!
Hole in ehaust manifold- yep!

Has anyone successfully reclaimed money on previous repairs after a recall was issued?

Cheers for any help

Martin
Good luck mate. Hope you get something back.

The letter clearly states this is a safety recall being monitored by DVSA. However my car still doesn't show that on the .GOV website.

They might get their act together in 2019....
Our letter came through today - BMW Stratstone have had the carfor two months so hopefully they can get the act together!
What makes me smile is in the letter it states that the work will take approx 2 hours ! - I’m up to two months

I had noticed coolant loss twice over the last year - I had to fill it up twice if memory serves.
Plus we had the smell in the cabin and a slight loss of power.
Earlier this year we had the EGR valve replaced as the engine management light came on and diagnostics showed it was the EGR valve.
When it went in for service in September the hole in the manifold was found.

So long answer I know but three of the symptoms on the letter we had.
The parts are on back order now just waiting on them - that is the delay.

You may be lucky and still be able to drive your car after it has been examined. Only in the extreme cases like ours do they keep the car and order the parts straight away.

Out of interest I have only had a courtesy car for servicing which was than a day. If its more than a day for this EGR issue I take it you only pay £10 or what ever the cost is, you don't have to pay per day for the courtesy car?

There should be no cost whatsoever for the recall. I had mine for 6 weeks and 2 days.

For our car through Enterprise we paid a £50 deposit I.e damage waiver but that’s all and it’s refundable on the return of the car

My dealer (Peter Vardy) insists I have to pay the insurance fee on courtesy car. It's only £12, but I ain't paying it, will be an interesting argument tomorrow at 8am in the dealership.
Don't see why I should pay when I'm driving forty miles out my way, in my time for them to fix an inherent design flaw with the car.

If it's Seafield Vardy you may find yourself in the 520D Touring. Terrible car, slower than a week in Saughton.

Also there should be absolutely no cost on the hire vehicle other than any excess waiver you choose, or if through Enterprise, the deposit which is refundable.

Yes. I had previously paid £381 for my EGR cooler to be replaced about a year ago. Usual symptoms; loss of coolant followed by engine management light. Car was just out of warranty, BMW gave a 'goodwill' 50% discount on the part. When the car went back in for the recall inspection nothing needed doing and the dealer agreed with BMW UK to refund my original outlay.

It looks like a design flaw, so I’m just curious whether they just replace faulty parts or changed something to make this engine more reliable. Or BMW just waits for this to happen again out of warranty and out of recall? As much as I loved that car I’m glad switching to petrol again

I think it's a safe bet to say they have modified the new part they are fitting.

Dealer called me yesterday to let me know parts had arrived and work was completed! So hopefully the parts supply is plentiful and anybody else waiting should get done soon.

Picking it back up tomorrow 👍👍

My response today :

"Still nothing as of yet I am afraid, still awaiting the gasket set.

I am in the business until Friday this week, off Christmas eve and back on the 27th so we can touch base again then.

Kind Regards"

My car has been in today (I won an X3 M-Sport in the Courtesy Car Lottery), they've advised it just needs an o-ring (mine was built Dec '14) which won't arrive until tomorrow.

Mine went in yesterday at Shitner Sunningdale. They told me they pressure tested the cooler and found no leaks so refitted it. They also topped up my coolant as they lost some when disconnecting things. They gave the EGR a clean and put it all back together. It was frustrating waiting as they said they needed the car for 6 hours but it took 8. Apparently an hour for things to cool down before they could start work. I have a tracker on the car and the car was untouched for 5 hours - was not started, moved etc. They only started working on it in the afternoon.
