Difference in Sound Between 340i/440i vs M140i/M240i
Hi all. Been a while since I've posted on here but I've been popping back every now and again to have a read.
I've got a 340i as a loan car from Sytner Tamworth while mine's in for a few warranty bits and I'm liking the sound on startup but it tends to quieten down a bit too much for my liking after 20 seconds or so. I've pretty much set my mind on an M240i as a replacement to my current car (430d) so I was wondering whether there's much difference in sound between the M140i/M240i's and the 340i/440i's? I'd love to hear from anybody that's either owned both or has had a good amount of time in both. Is the M140i/M240i exhaust tuned to give a slightly different sound or is it pretty much the same system/producing the same sound? Thanks! |

It's pretty much the same from my experience. The mpe improves things but it's not loud enough imo plus you cant get it anymore due to the gpf. They both sound a lot better from the outside than from the drivers seat.

How many miles has the loan car done? I found that the stock exhaust was pretty quiet early on in the car's life but as the miles added up it kept getting better (a bit louder and more 'fruity').

We'll have to see what other exhausts the aftermarket tuners come out with at decent prices. It definitely sounds a lot better in a car park so I think it probably does sound a lot better to pedestrians. The cabin is just so well insulated. It's got 6500 on it. Would that be a point where it's mostly gotten as loud as it will get or is there still some room for improvement? |

My 340i has the GPF, and I’ve disconnected the flap (when open), and fitted the dummy plug that BMW used on the MPE. No engine management light so far.

Good to know but strange. They say the MPE can't be fitted as it doesn't have a valve. Valved back boxes like the Remus are said to be fine. £800-£1000 for a back box is a touch high though. I hope we see a few more aftermarket back boxes or some kind of mid pipe that's compatible with the PPF/GPF cars which aren't as pricey.

I've read that the MPPSK was been withdrawn because it would remove the GPF, but assumed the GPF would be in the downpipe like a DPF, not the mid section. I personally suspect the MPPSK was withdrawn because of the remap rather than the physical exhaust system. |

AC Schnitzer dual sports exhausts for 40i engines are compatible with OPF. Both the homologated (German legal) and export versions are compatible. Available with chrome or black ceramic tailpipes. Both are valved.
https://shop.rossiters.co.uk/dual-sp...rom-8014-p.asp As I understand it from BMW dealers the issue is not with the valve, it's due to the lack of homologation. |

In my case it was about 12K-15K miles before the stock system started to sound noticeably better. Long time to wait though.

The M140 / M240 have a different exhaust and map to the 340 / 440 cars.
They sound a fair bit meatier / noisier than a stock 340 / 440. Newer cars are quieter on start up due to the PPF's. This is on all of the cars not just the M's. If you wanted a 340 or 440 to be louder just get the MPPSK. It'll be louder than a M140/M240 and be comparable to one wtih the MPE. Some say it's a smidge louder than the MPE. |

A touch louder than what this loaned 340i sounds like would be good tbh so if that's what the M240i would be I'd be happy. I've heard an MPPSK 440i and it was crazy loud on startup! haha |

I'd be really careful currently OP. Not many of us will have heard cars with the new PPF in. Over on the M3/4 forum there's a few who have had prior models currently very disappointed with the current sound (which wasn't awesome to begin with). Thus unless there are some really recent buyers, we don't know either.
It's all worsened by the withdrawal of MPE etc....confusion reigns! Might not be the answer you were looking for but currently, the only way to tell really is to go see a live car at the dealers. Anyone who got a car just before PPFs and got the last run of MPE's....must feel a little smug right now.....

For info, I've spoken with Paul from PCW Exhausts (www.exhaustmods.co.uk mentioned above) and he said he's done a few PPF/GPF cars now and there have been no issues regarding engine management lights, and the PPF/GPF works as normal.
I've seen on his Instagram page he's done an M4 and an M140i and I have to say the M140i does sound really good. He mentioned it's a resonator mod and a backbox mod. What he does to them I have no idea but apparently it's not visible on the exhaust. At under £300 I'll be very interested in getting him booked in once I've got my next car. |
