New 440i, insurance grievance

Hi all. I got me a relatively new 440i last week after a month of desperate searching. I am in the UK for 11 months and have been with the same insurance company. I thought I would drive the 440i for another month, get my sixth year of no claims and then apply for renewal.

So a day before I was due to collect my car, I rang my insurance to switch it over to my shiny car. Now I thought it would be a smooth process but I was very wrong. First, they were surprised I got this car and asked if I had something similar in the past. I was driving a 2008 civic hatch before this. As I was desperate, I kept my cool and told them about the 320d f30 they had insured for me for 10 months. The civic was just a stop gap before my next bimmer.

Later, they called me back to say that marker study would not insure the motor. I was completely taken back by this and more so by the fact that they won’t give me the no claims for last year as I have only been with them for 11 months.

Am I wrong to be unhappy about this? I thought insurance companies have to give you a quote. Can they refuse that? Can they also ask you about your car buying history, whether you’ve been driving expensive cars before? Especially since I already have 5 years no claims and am 43 years old?

This was with a broker who is well reputed.

Will appreciate any thoughts on this.

I have never got a good quote of brokers to be honest! Once was trying to get a quote for Z4M and had the same questions like you did, e.g. Have you had experience driving this car and previous car! Have you tried one of the insurance comparison websites?

Hi. Sorry I forgot to mention. I ended up insuring the car for £2199 for the year. That was the best price I got from different sites.

This particular broker insured my Irish F30 on the vin and beat the other quotes so I guess I was expecting a lot from them.

Is it worth fighting for these 11 months NCB now?

Wow - that's quite a premium. My 335i is under £400 a year. What is your driving and insurance record in the UK? Sounds to me like they either have zero information on you, or, even worse, have something negative on you. I'd ask them to explain the risk profile they have on you.

Sounds very odd to me, clearly something we're not seeing here, 43 years old and 5 years NC on a 440i should be no worse than £600-£800 even in a "bad" postcode with one of the big direct insurers like Aviva, why are you going through a broker?

The worst I ever had to pay was £1500 a year at 39 years old on a brand new 80k 911 via Porsche insurance but I live in the hood.

It will be a number of things adding up together.

A Manchester postcode doesn't help much either. Your job is a risk factor too, not sure what you do? You have to play the game and keep trying the online quotes. I changed my role from sales manager to commercial manager and it went down.

Also, do you have a wife, partner, or parent you can add as a named driver, that might bring it down too.

WOW, that's crazy money for your age I'd say! That premium would put me off driving

Thanks guys. I only moved to the U.K. last December from Ireland. The 5 years no claims has been from Ireland. My driving license is also Irish. Yea, my Manchester post code may be an issue. I am Psychiatrist by the way. So I don’t think my job is that high risk.

I have no points or driving convictions. I am notorious for being a slow driver amongst my friends.
I thought the insurance quote was not too bad for a 440i so already paid the premium. I have been on the phone to a few insurers about why my premiums are too high. They just do a good job being vague.

Does that mean my annual premiums would stay thereabouts for years?

The odd thing is that the new insurer, aviva accepted my no claims automatically. I thought they would be asking for a letter. But I am thinking of sending them my no claims just so I don’t have problems when this insurance expires.

In future it is worth doing the app for Aviva. A 200 mile drive on a motorway at 70 will net you a decent score and a 28% discount next time round.

Are you on the electoral role? Price comparison sites return higher quotes if you're not. Thats one heck of a high premium for a 440i at your age.

You do not need to. They audit randomly across people that join them, as a lot of insurers do. If you haven't been asked to produce it now you never will. Your full no claims will just show on next years renewal automatically.

As others have said, you can download an aviva driving app to your phone, do one safe, smooth, drive of over 200 miles and register it to your aviva account for a big discount on your next years premium.

Personally at the price you'd paid I'd still be having a look around for quotes now even if you already paid your premium. You can probably cancel and get a decent sized refund.

Are your no claims from protected no claims, i.e. Have you had any claims in the last few years? Blame, or not to blame?

Sorry for replying late. Spent the last two days installing a dashcam.

I never had protected no claims. The only thing is that one of my coworkers bumped into my parked car as they were reversing out. But they let me know it was them and gave me insurance details. I then had my car repaired by their insurer. Does this impact my premium as well?

I've tried to shop around but not getting any better quotes.

I am insured by quote me happy. I guess they are a broker and AVIVA is the insurer. Will contact them if they would allow me to use the app. I normally drive right under the speed limit so I guess I should be okay.

Hi, I believe I was on the electoral roll in my previous address. My I need to confirm this. Thanks for pointing this out. It should help with my next premium as well.

My 440i is about £750 a year. I'm 40 with only 1 year NCD. The area I live in is OK so that's kinda helps.

The other thing to note is you don't have to complete the year to get the NC - for example when I started driving I was getting 'free' years - so I had held a license for 5 years and had 8 years no claims (as an insurer can increase wheat they say you have).

Ultimately your current insurer is only interested in what your previous insurer says you have.

And £2,200 for a 440i is insane at your age and circumstance - In your case I would be ringing up the insurers and not using middlemen, explaining the situation and seeing what you get.

Similar to never accepting your renewal as a 5 minute phone call will generally net you a 10% saving...

Curious - what's your excess an mileage in that £2200?

I'd be trying specialist type insurance. Adrian Flux for example.
