driver door will not unlock from time to time when I pull the handle

Hi

I bought my first BMW (CPO F30 328i xdrive) about 6 months ago and have been enjoying every part of it. However, there is one annoying issue that I have noticed and wanted to see if anybody else has experienced it.

So from time to time and I can't seem to figure out if there is a pattern, but when I turn off the ignition and pull the handle to unlock it, the lock will not unlock. I am able to pull the handle and the lock knob comes up, but it goes back down like it's loaded by spring. It will actually not unlock.

This happens on both Left and Right hand side front doors. I can simply press the center unlock button and I can get out fine, but it's just been bothering me.

Has anybody else experienced this? Am I doing something wrong? I'll take it to the dealership soon for oil change but wanted to hear if anybody else has experienced this. Thank you!

Here is the link to the video I just took this weekend, just to clarify the issue. Thanks!

6 Bimmers and have never seen this happen. Ask your service adviser to take a look.

Very odd. I think your locks are going bad.

What man?

Unless you press the central lock/unlock button, you have to pull on each door handle twice to open it; it's a safety feature.

Try pulling twice when not pressing unlock to see if it opens; I bet it will and your car is just fine.

Let us know if this doesn't work.

I have this issue. I pull twice, but the door will not unlock. It happens rarely, and only on the driver's side door.

I think I've seen something like this when I've tried unlocking the car when I'm still in gear with the clutch pressed...like when I pull up to a curb to let someone out. Door immediately locks again. I'm sure it's a safety feature. Could this be what you're talking about?

Hi rolltidef32, I am aware of this safety feature. The issue is that even if I double pull, the lock does not unlock. There is some resistance to the lock and the lock it knob will return to lock position.

Thanks for the input, but I don't think this is the issue. It literally feels like something is jammed and its preventing me from unlocking, but when I press the unlock button it unlocks fine. Strange, I know. I guess I will take it in and ask the dealer about it. Thank you

Hi ticklemethere, I see that you also have a 2013 328. Have you taken it to the dealership and asked?

thank you

Clearly you've never owned an E53 x5.

I had one for 10 years and never had the issue the OP describes.

Does the car have the alarm system by chance? It may think the car is armed when it actually isn't. If you lock the car and arm it the locks are disabled from inside the car. It's not acting like it's 100% in armed state since the central lock button works, but it could be something in the general module is "locking it out", no pun intended.

Regardless - a trip to the dealer is in order. This is not normal operation.

You should take it to the dealer ASAP because that's a huge safety issue. Last thing you need is to be stuck in a situation where you need to get out quick and you can't unlock the car.

Maybe the car had some water flooding issues?

Thank you guys for all the inputs. I guess this really isn't a known issue in the BMW community. I will take it to the dealership and update if anything comes out of it.

Haha, happened to me a couple times with our E53. Fortunately didn't need to crawl out through the rear hatch, lol

May we imply that the dealer fixed it?

Just take it in to the dealership. I had this problem on both the driver and passenger door. I took it in and the locking/release mechanism was bad. The dealership replaced it and everything has been fine since.

I had this happen to me before. Twice, I had to put the window down and use the outer door handle to get out. Dealer said something was snagging the locking mechanism, so they replaced it.

My driver lock would pop up, not not all the way and it was delayed by like a half second behind all the other doors.

It's been fine since they fixed it a month ago..

This is starting to sound like a recall. If this were to happen during an emergency the lawsuit would be big. Well, likely a settlement with a non-disclosure.

Hope BMW does the right thing if there's enough data.
