Go back and ask for a second key. They should have had a second one made before selling it to you.

My local dealer in Oklahoma quoted me $275 for the fob/key + $75 to program it to the car

New cars come with lots of things that used ones don't. The time to insist on a second key was before the deal was done.
Did the OP accidentally run over your cat or something? Its obvious he didn't ask for a second key before buying the car and he simply wants to know what his options are. People make choices and sometimes make mistakes too.

Good grief. As the owner of multiple new and used BMWs over the years, I’ve come to this forum often for practical advice. The upside is there are plenty of helpful people. The downside is that the worst, stereotypical side of BMW owners occasionally comes out.

The quoted post is the perfect example of the latter. You want to know why some people stereotype BMW drivers as insufferable, tone-deaf elitists? Read that post.

So you feel pretty smug with your leased or purchased at retail new BMW. Good for you. Chances are that the OP got his for about 20k off sticker, with less than 10k miles on it, full warranty. Let’s say he drops another, worst case, 1k on a second key because the used dealer only got one when the used program car went through the system with only one key. Well, OP is still approx. 19k richer than you. But you get to feel good about yourself because you got two keys from the dealer. So you have that going for you. Which is nice.

Wow, that’s a lot of teen angst for a thread that’s a year and a half old.

You registered just to get that off your chest?

I ordered a key fob with eEuroparts. These 2 parts are needed:

51217268293 = ignition key insert, $57
66129312533 = remote transmitter key (sport line) (coded), $308

Total was $365, however I paid $347 thanks to some credit I had from previous purchases. The fob came with a battery already installed. I ordered the sport line fob because that matches my existing one.

The activation was not straightforward. I made sure to keep the working fob out of range, inside the house. I tried multiple times the instructions found online. At the end, it worked. It took me around 15 minutes total, with 4-5 attempts and small breaks in between trying to find out what I was doing wrong.

I believe the way the new fob is held against the steering column is very important. In my last try, I had it "pointing" in between the arrows as compared to having it "sideways."

GL to those willing to try. You can DIY, no need to pay extra $ to the dealer.

First off necro thread lol it’s old. Secondly, I feel you are taking this a bit too much to heart. His comment was on point. A new car comes with two keys. They are under no obligation to provide a second key on a used car. Only exception would be if the car is a CPO in which they should supply the second key.

However, if this wasn’t addressed before the deal was done and they drove off, shame on them. That isn’t the dealers fault. For all intents and purposes the car might have been traded in with only one key. Again the dealer is under no financial obligation to replace the second key on a used vehicle. Now, some may go ahead and order the second key anyway even after the fact to keep you happy but for the most part that is entirely up to their good graces if the issue wasn’t addressed beforehand.

How much should it cost?
$20

What does it cost?
$300-400

If you have a newer model 2016+ you pretty much better get it from the dealer as the entries are in the BMW system.. I believe only 2 keys can be active at any given time in their system so they need to delete the one you lost and enter in a new one with the replacement they ship from Germany

You actually believe a new fob should cost $20 ?

What decade do you live in? Im guessing the 80's...

You are kind of correct in your statement above. I believe only two fobs can be active for Comfort Access features but up to 10 can be active at any given time for one vehicle.

I recall a post where somebody said he bought a key cheap off eBay and was able to get it programmed for a small fee. Or maybe he just did the trick where you hold it against the steering column, not sure.

Otherwise conventional wisdom is to buy it from the dealer for around $300 as mentioned above.
Right above your original quote, you quoted him, where he stated he bought used. If it’s not CPO,OP is not owed a 2nd key.

Actually,it is probably not CPO. CPO includes 2 keys. It’s probably out of warranty. OP should have negotiated for another key.

At no time did the OP state he was looking for a free key from the dealer.

I'm the fourth owner of my F30, which I bought at a Volvo dealer. I only received one fob. I ordered a new fob online and activated it myself. The Comfort Access works fine on the new fob.

I can't tell if a PO disabled the missing key. My guess is : there's a third fob out there in perfect working condition (including the CA feature).

Please see post 29 above for details on my new fob.

I got quoted by BMW Toronto dealership (Canada) for $500 for the fob and $160 for programming. I have 2011 528i with comfort access.
Would like to avoid stealership route..

@Fredo, does your car have comfort access and does your new key works same as original (memory seats etc)?

sikotic , Yes I'm still looking. Your extra fob wasn't programmed for any car and I can easily program for mine?

Please let me know your price for your fob and feasibility/price of shipping it to Toronto, Canada (PostalCode M5V3V9)

When I asked about that $160 programming fee, I was told that since my car has a comfort access, the fob has to be programmed.
Also when I inquired about fob price initially I was asked several times if my car has comfort access or not.
Thanks for the info - It's great that it's a 5 min job that I can easily do.
