Correct. New cars are electronic, the old ones were vacuum.

Good to know I was just coming to start a thread on this!

I've seen this on 2 different 340i's and thought there was something odd. So the drivers are probably in Econ/Comfort, makes sense. However one car never opened, and the other opened only while they were breaking. Seemed odd to open when breaking and close when gassed?

I notice this car produces alot more soot than my outgoing E46 M3. Do these cars run rich by default?

Get the MPE. It stays open in comfort after warmup.

Alright guys I am going crazy here
just picked up a 2016 435xi gran coupe and this damn flap will not open!
cold start, idle, sport, sport +
It only opens after 3k during driving

I am trying to get it to open while im not driving so I can disconnect the wire and leave it always open.
on my previous 2015 X6 it was simple, once you start the car, the flap opens and closes testing itself and thats when I was able to disconnect it. It seems this car is different even though the flap and connector are exactly the same.

suggestions on how to open the flap while parked?

Read my post (#14 I think). 10 min mod that eliminates you from going crazy.

Dead opposite, super lean. Like 13.5:1 WOT and 14.7-15:1 under part throttle and idle. But yes I know what you mean BMW's do seem to have a lot of soot on the exhausts, it might be that we notice it more because the tips on a BMW are polished chrome.

Also the two pipes are muffled differently, so you couldnt do alternate flaps if you wanted.

I hate having to clean both tail pipes, can I code the valve to be permanently closed so I only have to clean one?

Flap Removal??

First off I apologize I'm new here. Quick question about the flap though. Not sure if this was the right place to reply but, If I consider doing a muffler delete and remove the flap completely (just replace with a Y.) Will I get a CEL or any other malfunction?

It is funny that I saw this thread today because I actually noticed this yesterday while I just happened to be looking at my exhaust. I didn't really think anything of it at the time, but glad to see its normal.

This is because the exhaust on our cars is valved, meaning it has a "flap" inside one of the pipes, and can be controlled electronically by the car for various reasons. In most cases, the flap will be closed, and this is the default setting for both Eco Pro and Comfort mode, this is why you see one tip clean and one tip dirty. In Sport and Sport+, it is open.

Here is a summary of the function of the flap (to my best knowledge):
  • Flap closed on startup to help warm up the cat's faster.
  • Flap will open itself when the car reaches idle, and will typically open itself when the car is idling.
  • After driving away in either Comfort or Eco Pro, the flap will close, and remain closed unless you give the car hard throttle.
  • The flap will remain open in Sport and Sport+ mode.

If you car doesn't do what I described to the T, don't worry, it doesn't mean somethings wrong, the car's computer is very smart, and only under certain conditions will that flap open itself, so if you go out and start your car and it happens to be open, don't worry, maybe your cars already warm, etc, etc.
My car does exactly as you describe and I can't see any reason to do the unplug mod when all you have to do is push 'sport' after start up! I suppose it may sound more meaty on start up with the flap open but, apart from that there seems no reason to me to mess with it, particularly as the world class engineers at BMW designed it this way for a reason!!

I'm pretty sure it Doesn't open right away after you press sport. It still stay shut until the catalytic converter warms up for emissions
