Tuning my F31 318d touring (2016)

Hey everyone,
So... I have been toying with the idea of getting a bit more oomph out of my car. it has a 143 Hp engine as everyone knows... and I am hesitant as to what the best road to pursue is.

remapping seems to be the safest bet from what I read? not too costly, not too big gains...

chip tuning has its detractors (electrical problems, may push the engine a bit too much?

Changing parts and modding: New intercooler / exhaust / injectors... PLUS remap / chip. Most expensive way but probably the safest and most gains

I am really not too savvy in this mattrs as you can obviously tell. But, realistically, how much HP increase I can safely expect going this rountes?

Any recommendations from experienced users?

I already did a search in the forum but did not find much info.

Thanks in advance and have a great week!

Have a good look through realoem .com - you should be able to identify which components are common across the 18d and 20d etc.

From there you can choose a remap limit that you are happy with. In the UK the 20d has a stock output of 186bhp, and many tuners will map it to around 220. No engine mods required but you may want to consider upgrading your brakes unless you already have M-Sport brakes.

My 30d is currently remapped from 258bhp (published stock) to 350, but as all the major internals (pistons, con rods, main bearings, etc) are common with the 35d (313bhp published stock), and many people are running the 35d 'mapped to 370-400bhp, it's likely that 350 is a safe figure despite it being a ~90bhp increase.

hey thanks for the data!

any recommendations on what specific components to keep my eye out on that may impact on the upgrade? I am quite sure injectors for example, differ, but most of the engine is basically the same.

In short, which components are a red flag if they are not upgraded when tuning?

Sorry, trying to get some knowledge out of this too

Thanks!!

I don't know how active/expert the remappers are in the US for BMWs but in the UK we have a lot of choice.

The 18d is basically a detuned 20d (just a different map) and AFAIK the main components are the same.

Given that the block, crank, main bearings, con rods and pistons are (AFAIK) all common, the 18d has plenty of latent potential which can be unlocked by a software-only remap.

Unless you want to achieve a huge increase in bhp (say >240, in which case perhaps better to start with a more appropriate engine i.e. not an 18d) you may not need to upgrade any engine components.

Having talked to a friend who sells some of the tuning units needed to do a ECU reprogramming he told me that the 316D, 318D and 320D are basically the same engine. When dealing with “low” hp models going up to about 200 hp there are no differences in neither brakes nor bearings or anything.
He sells power gate and I’m considering upgrading my 316D to the equivalent of the 320D, so you should be fine doing the same with your 318D ...

Fuel system and turbo is different, so it's not entirely true

Also the pistons on 18d and 20d are from a different material, as are injectors.

16d and 18d are the same to my knowledge.

i had my 2013 f31 318d remapped around 6 weeks ago, standard 143bhp to estimated around 190bhp,
alot better acceleration, seems alot better in the upper rev range aswell as before you could feel the lower bhp,
car is still stock apart from remap and i am very happy with it

After chip tuning you can get around 190, yea
Heared that, after removing DPF you can get around ~210

Did you do anything from the "upgrade" list ?
Give a feedback if you performed any moding

I think the 316D and 318D has smaller turbo and injectors.

Yap. In F30 B47 engine in 16d and 18d variants should indeed be mechanically identical. 20d has a bigger turbo, different injectors, high-pressure fuel pump, piston heads are from a different material (better heat properties) etc.
