Front tyre scrubbed off

Morning

Noticed the front tyre has scrubbed of the first 1/2" on drivers side, the rest of the tyre is all good, what do people reckon I should do?

Cheers

Get you're geometry checked.

They do wear the edges a bit, offside more so, as you turn right more than left in this country.

A full laser alignment is quite a good investment and is relatively cheap. I would go down this route - maybe you can correct things and still get full life out of the tyre.

Had this on both my F30's and have twice had an alignment done. Unfortunately the numerous potholes on UK roads don't help.

It has to be a PROPER alignment too..............not necessarily BMW, but someone who knows how to use the Hunter/KDS machine and knows what to do with a BMW

i.e. weighing it down or measuring etc

Ok cheers, do people think that it is ok to get the alignment done and there should be no need for new tyres?

Ask the guys at the aligning place. Depends how bad it is and if it’s not legal.

Things to check/adjust/fix :

Tyre pressures.
Even ride height : springs aren't broken ?
Full 4-wheel laser alignment.

Picture of the tyre wear would be useful.

That is very common if you are on runflats? Certainly get geometry checked but the cause may well be a combination of that and under inflation - runflats have very stiff walls so any under inflation will result in excessive wear on the edges as they are taking all the load - especially outside edges on the fronts. I usually found I needed to run at the full load recommended pressure to get even wear across the tyre. Having said that I lived in Milton Keynes (the land of high speed roundabouts) for a while and my tyres often suffered from that no matter what I did and often looked like I'd been on a few track days... As long as the tread on the 2/3rds remaining is legal and you are not getting near to the canvas then you are fine legally but depending on the tread depth on the remainder you are probably as well to consider changing it as your braking efficiency will be compromised in the wet.

Yes, RFTs will knock off the edges with under inflated tyres as you say. Made worse if you make lots of short trips when tyres are cold. RFTS take longer to warm to working pressure, so we need to allow for that in the setting pressures.

Many a BMW with tyre wear has alignment in spec', so ensure tyre pressures are high enough first, before jumping on the "alignment is necessary" advice from many a garage.

Yep this^^

Especially on Bridgestone run flats as their sidewalls are very stiff! Set the tyres to close to the maximum load pressures on the door label.

I got 30k + miles out of the Bridgestone RFT tyres that came with my f31. Even when I replaced them they were legal and tread wear was very even. I suspect you have alignment issues of the wear is very uneven.

My front off side tyre is like this on approx 1" of the outside edge. However still has at least 5mm on rest of tyre so it's legal.

I changed my other 3 earlier this year, when I put my summers back on. The rears were worn and the near side front had an egg in the sidewall. The off side front was the only one I could save, hence the reason it's like this.

this used to be very common on the e8x cars, but not so much in my experience with the f30's.

Was a lot worse on my E90, struggled to get 15k out of the fronts. It was so bad I used to rotate them to the back after 12k. The F30 is better but still wears the outside edge on corners. I go around corners like an old granny to stop it scrubbing the edges off. Anyone who isn't suffering this probably does a lot of motorway miles, it is town driving and roundabouts that kills them

There is loads of tyre left on it, just the outside 2cm.....pretty gutted to be honest as there is nothing really wrong with the rest of the front tyres....

Just up the pressures and carry on, they’re perfectly legal and safellike that.

Definitely safe if there’s no bulges and it’s not down to the cords. As others have said it’s just the central 3/4 that have to be above 1.6mm depth:

Had exactly the same issue recently. After 15k both fronts have approx 4mm across most of tyre but outside edge on both down to about 1mm. As others have said, get alignment sorted, inflate to upper end of manufactures recommended pressure and then keep an eye for cord over coming months.

Is there visible tread on this ' first 1/2" '? If so, all good. If no tread visible then I believe the tyre would not be legal.

The tyre is like a slick on the edge so the tracking is massively out, got it booked in tomorrow for the tracking and then going to put new tyres on....going to Devon on holiday so got about 1000 miles to do with the family in so not taking any risks....
