Bmw F30/F31 320d Oil Service/Filters ?

Hello all,

Would like to get some info regards servicing bmw 320d N47 by yourself, what oil do you use? Is it BMW LL04? What brand etc. What brand Filters do you use? What are the intervals to change oil?

Thanks in advance

Keeping it simple from my side. Using 5.2L of BMW LL-12 0W-30 with the OE filter. Keep it in the car for 7500 miles +- 300 miles or so. Just hit the car with some LiquiMoly Ceratec the last oil change - quieted things down a bit, but could have been placebo as well.

I also get LL12-FE, fairly inexpensive online. Get 6 bottles, 1 liter each. The last oil filter I got was Mahle. Very easy to change oil on these cars, would recommend DIY. A lot of great videos online with step by step guidance. I had to special order the oil filter housing socket, everything else is common in every toolbox. I also used a QuickJack to lift the car, since I cannot fit under it like I can for most of my other vehicles, present and past.

From my oil analysis (I've had it done for quite a few changes now) there should be no issue doing an oil change every 10k mi with BMW OE LL04 and OE filters under normal driving. Even me doing a significant amount of track days a year and an OCI of 8k mi was totally fine. With higher quality oils it should be possible to go beyond that.

Great vid farkle!!!

Do you have a link to the oil extractor you used? That is a fine piece of hardware for someone like me who hates the mess of bottom oil changes.

I have the Schwaben/ECS Tuning extractor.

If you have a Harbor Freight nearby you can also get their extractor, which is a bit cheaper with one of their ubiquitous 20% off coupons.

Great vid.
I'm really surprised by how much oil you drained out after using the extractor!! I love the extractor but that gives me a little pause in using it!

Did you get the filter at the dealer or an online side?
Do you make use of the Mobil 1 rebate every quarter?

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

I order OE filters from FCPEuro to take advantage of their lifetime warranty. I may start ordering oil from them too since the Formula ESP isn't available any more (current ESP has a different base). I wish I had known about that rebate, that's a good tip! That said, I bought "a couple years worth" of oil back in 2018, so I'm still set for a while.
