I’m guessing as I found out they (main dealers) are very good at dodging any responsibility when their team mess up or outright lie to a customer.

If they show me a video of someone with a spanner on my nipples, I'll apologise and go away. Anything else and they're lying.

I'm not sure that's appropriate for a public forum

They sent me a (low res) still image from the workshop CCTV footage that shows the brake fluid change machine hooked up to the car. You can also see the mechanic reaching up behind the offside front wheel.

From that at least, it appears he did go through the motions. I still need to see the full video to see if he did anything with the front outer nipples or anything at the rear. I've also sent them my photos, but not yet heard anything more.

Apparently the mechanic is away on some BMW training course, and they wanted to speak to him when he was back.

I'll update when I have more news.

Had another chat with the dealer today, and also spoke to one of the technicians.

He reckons that it’s not necessary to bleed the front callipers through both nipples. He gave me some story about the fluid flowing in a loop between the inner and outer part of the caliper, so bleeding through one nipple will effectively flush both sides. You only need to use both nipples if there’s air in the system like when a new caliper is fitted.

Now I’m no brake caliper expert, but I know how a caliper works and how it’s assembled. I certainly know that both sides of the caliper are dead ends. There’s an internal drilling at the lower end of the caliper that allows fluid to pass from the inner to the outer, but unless you open both nipples, you’ll never bleed the air out, or replace the fluid in each side of the caliper.

If there was a second drilling at the top, you would not get circular flow. It would just take the shortest route (path of least resistance) and only bleed the inner side. I got the feeling the technician honestly thinks he’s correct, but he’s not.

They did say I could book it back in so they can bleed the outer side, but it wasn’t clear if this was something I would have to pay for, or if there would be a free courtesy car.

It would be good if HighlandPete could comment.

Not had a chance to jack it up and look, but I think there probably will be.

It's really simple. To do the job properly both sides of the caliper should be fully flushed.

That's why there are bleed nipples on both sides of callipers which have opposing pistons.

You're right. The technician is wrong.

Agree. And as the video, correct procedure is outside First, inside Second.

Any reason why the rear calipers only have a inner bleed nipple when there is still a piston on each side?

I think this is better than when I had my last BMW. On that occasion they didn't do up one of the brake nipples. One of the rears was only finger tight. Needless to say the messages you get when the reservoir empties is pretty startling. I then re did the job properly myself.

Have to say the whole experience rather put me off BMW.

On the rear calipers, there's space to have a fluid pathway above the pistons, but below the level of the bleed nipple. On the front, the only place for a fluid pathway at the top, would put it above the height of the bleed nipple, so you could never bleed the air out.

The technician is talking out of his/her arse.

To help you with your resolution, i've saved and attached a PDF of the procedure from ISTA (the workshop manual). Both bleeders are described, outside and then inside

Thanks for that. I actually have ISTA on my laptop, so have already seen that.

Yes sadly this is the case, my local dealer damaged my car, luckily I had dash cam footage of them discussing how to hide it and of them "touching" in the damage, this was always in my back pocket if they didn't pay out, must admit I got very close to using it, they just said our engineers wouldn't do that. After a complaint to BMW the money eventually arrived in my account, took two months start to finish.

I have to say my outer nipples showed signs of spannering after my brake fluid change. Have mildly corroded since. I can totally see your reasons for being suspicious.

Personally if any dealer did that to me it would be the last time i use them ever! What if they were to damage your dashcam by interfering with it, they would just try and put the blame on you.

After all if they are doing their job right they have nothing to hide, or fear!
