Tire rubbing sound from rear when turning. Rear Diff?

So the issue I'm having is when taking a turn, the rear sounds like the tire is rubbing but its not. I have stock suspension and stock 18" wheels.

Quick google shows similar problems on the e46's and e9x's. Its stating the noise is likely coming from the clutches in the limited slip differential. Solution for those were change the oil with special differential oil.

https://www.m3post.com/forums/showpo...80&postcount=9

Anyone else have this issue?

It probably couldn't hurt to try the oil, but note that the campaign was for new cars, and that the noise usually went away as the cars were broken in.

Your car most likely does not have a limited slip diff unless it was ordered that way or aftermarket.. It might be an issue with the transfer case though.. Just a thought..

I think you're right about not having LSD. But the noise is deff from the rear so I don't think its the TC.

Items that are stressed and could make noise when taking a turn include wheel bearings and CV joints.

I think my tires are actually rubbing on my inner fender liner. Took the wheel off and checked it.

I'm going to mount my gopro inside somewhere and see if I can visually see it lol. Either that or just paint the inner well white and see if it rubs.

Only does it during left turns and giving it gas coming out of the turn.

Woah, definitely some rubbing go on, with what appear to be stock wheels... Well at least you found your problem.

I am curious as to how this would happen with a stock suspension and wheels.. Does the car sit level or is it sagging in the rear?.. Are you carrying something very heavy in the rear??

I'd be more concerned that it happens in a turn. That indicates something in the suspension is allowing lateral movement.

Exactly my thought. It doesn't happen when going straight or even with passengers in the back seat.

My guess is either trailing arm, guiding suspension link or track strut bushings.

I took the gopro and mounted on the rear fender to see if I can see any lateral movement but nothing.

Took the gopro and mounted somewhere inside the well and took it for a drive but bc of the low light, I couldn't really tell much.

Took measurements between between the two rear wheels and the side with the issue (passenger), it measures about 1/4" lower then the driver side. checked the gaps between the wheel and left most point, right most point of the wheel well, and they're about the same (poor mans alignment lol.)

Now I'm wondering if I have issues with the spring.

Since this only happens when taking left turns and never straight even with passengers in the rear, heres my new theory: when going straight, the sway bar keeps the car leveled to a certain degree but when taking the left turn, the force that shifts the corner weight (rear passenger), the sway bar is going to push down on the passenger side while pulling up on the driver side to try and level the car. which in turn is allowing the extra travel in the suspension.

I believe all f30 series cars are higher on the driver side.

Yes.. Mine is also a little higher on the driver's side.. Either way I would bring the car to an alignment specialist because the wear on that tire is not normal.. They should be able to check all of your suspension components and hopefully find the problem..

I was going to take it to the dealer but I have the lifetime alignment with firestone so I'll just bring it there to have them re-align the car and go from there.

They 100 percent are. The battery is on the passenger side and so is the gas tank. I'm actually having rubbing issues on my fender liner since I'm slammed. The passenger side is a tad lower than the driver so it's rubbing on the passenger side. Fixing it this weekend

Make sure the wheel liner is not installed incorrectly!
