If the upgraded TU fuel system can keep up, it looks like these cars will be very fast street cars for not much money.

That's what the O1 head is for

Great video!
Agreed 100%.

A much better engine without a doubt.

I was torn over buying the M240i because of the engine.

I bought OGM2 instead but think it should have had a version of the B58, not the N55.

Great video!
N55 needs Jesus especially when it comes to bolting it up with mods

They will likely pull the head from B58D if that becomes an obstacle.

Watched this video and realized just how lame BMWs are now......it actually took BMW to give a motor to Toyota for a legendary tuner/builder like steph to work on one and do a tear down video already!!! Lol.

LOL. Give JDM tuners a BMW powerplant and they already have it completely torn down for a 1000hp build. There will be new turbo kits everywhere in a couple months for B58.

F30 340i and 2018 X3 M40i - OG B58 (B58B30M0).
2019 X3 M40i - B58D (B58B30O1).
Supra - B58C (B58B30M1).

The last two are very different from the first, and the main difference between the last two is the manifold. See the attached document for details.

Awesome tear down! Excited to see what performance parts the aftermarket will turn up for this engine.

I also agree that the integrated exhaust shouldn't be looked at as a bad thing but a easier way to bolt on a bigger turbo!

The integrated manifold is great for performance. Now you have cooling jackets that are keeping EGTs down so you can push the car farther. It also reduces hot components in the engine bay.

Also BMW needs a quality manifold runner system for high efficiency. It doesn't just relate to power, it's also MPG, throttle response, etc. With a twinscroll turbo it's critical to get that dialed in. We are still yet to see a quality aftermarket turbo manifold for the B58.

And as shown above, a simple adapter can be made to mount larger turbos. I don't see that as a hindrance at all. If anything, it raises the ceiling for a stock head. The only downside is it puts a lot more strain on the cooling system.

Wow, that's the best teardown I've ever seen on YouTube regarding a BMW straight 6.

Thanks!

I heard this too. another internet lie like the m235i's dry sump.

I'm glad to finally confirm it though. been wondering.
Why would a 235i with a standard bmw engine (n55) have a dry sump oil system... like what retards actually believed that?

It's NOT an ///M car lol

it was actually misreported during the initial launch excitement as being motor instead of transmission.

being a S motor doesn't make it a dry sump either.
