2012 BMW 3 Series (F30) -- My Dream F30 Saga
I am starting a multi-part series relating to the F30 3 Series.
Part 1 Engines The engines that I have decided should be used are based on North American distribution but I do believe the basic structure could work worldwide. None really exist yet but are very reasonable conclusions of what BMW is capable of delivering to its world-wide fanbase. Doing so should/would cut down on a lot of unnecessary manufacturing thus saving money in one area making it possible to infuse another area of development (i.e. weight saving tech, different part...) The 3 Series has, until recently, consistently employed 4 Cylinder power. Heck thats all you could get in the E30 for the first 3 years. It is making a comeback in a big way. Better handling and economy... I'm all for it Engine specs based on an average vehicle weight loss over 150 lbs across the line-up All engines use ultra-light aluminum construction (magnesium where possible) 320i - 2.0 NA 4 Cylinder, 6500rpm redline - Direct Injection 200hp @ 6000 - Valvetronic VANOS 180 lb ft @ 2500-5500 - 6spd manual 28mpg city 36mpg highway - Optional 7spd DCT 32mpg comb. (34 w/dct) 325i - 2.0 Variable Turbo 4 Cylinder 6000rpm redline - Direct Injection 250hp @ 5800 - Valvetronic VANOS 230 lb ft @ 2000-5000 - 6spd manual 25mpg city 35 mpg highway - Optional 7spd DCT 30 mpg comb. (32 w/DCT) 325d - 2.0 Turbo-Diesel 4 Cylinder 4500rpm redline - Variable Turbo 200hp @ 4000 - Valvetronic VANOS 300 lb ft @ 1500-3000 - 6spd manual 35mpg city 45 mpg highway - 7spd DCT 40 mpg comb. (42 w/DCT) 330i - 3.0 NA In-line 6 Cylinder 7500rpm redline - Direct Injection 300hp @ 7000 - Valvetronic VANOS 280 lb ft @ 3000-6000 - 6spd manual 20 mpg city 30 mpg highway - 7spd DCT 25 comb. ( 26 w/DCT) 335i - 3.0 Turbo In-line 6 cylinder 7000rpm redline - Direct Injection 350hp @ 6500 rpm - Valvetronic VANOS 350lb ft @ 1500-5500 - 6spd manual 18 mpg city 28 mpg highway - 7 spd DCT 23 comb. (25 w/ DCT) 335d - 3.0 Twin-Turbo 6 cylinder 5000rpm redline - Variable Turbo's 300 hp @ 4500 - 8 spd auto 450 lb ft @ 1200-3200 - Active aero 30mpg city 40mpg highway 35 mpg comb. This engine line up could infiltrate every model BMW makes along with the simplified naming scheme. As for people think the NA cars may cannibalize other models sales, I think the major difference in power delivery and driving feel would fully differentiate the models. This would do alot of good for the company who has lost some respect lately due to some unnecessary (ridiculous X6) moves especially in this economic climate. BMW has to get back to their roots and stop trying to please everyone because they may lose the die-hard fans that got them to where they are today. Ill be back for another part in the ongoing "My Dream F30" saga. Thanks for reading! |

According to that, there would be absolutely no need for the 320 and 330. They are so close in specs to the other hypothetical engines that it would be cost prohibitive to make them all.

diesels, even 4 cyl, weigh as much roughly as 6cyl petrols. My car which has the 2l 4cyl unit has same shock and spring specs as the 6cyl models for example. it is not that much lighter. 4cyl petrol, with turbo, could be quite good in terms of handling though as the homologation special 320Si model proves.
