Reverse Default To Top View
When I put my car in reverse, iDrive defaults to the rearview camera. Is there a way to make the default camera in reverse be Top View/Surround View (with or without coding)?
Things that don't work: 1. Pushing the iDrive controller/camera button doesn't flip between rear camera and top view cameras. I have to go to the left, scroll down, and uncheck the box "Rearview Camera" every time. 2. Say I uncheck the box and reverse into a parking spot but don't like my alignment. If i inch forward and then go back in reverse for a 2nd try, it goes right back to the rearview camera <--- especially annoying when someone is waiting behind you. 3. (6MT Only) Park with shifter still in reverse and turn off the car. When I start the car with the shifter still in reverse, it shows the top view camera still. But if i go into neutral and back to reverse, it reverts to the rear camera. I have a 2018 f32, but it seems like some 2017s may experience the same setup from the factory. You can easily check firmware with E-sys, but I have no idea which ones support. My F010 does; my F015 used to before last update. |

A BMW Genius confirmed that the reverse camera became standard on LCI models because of US regulations that require reverse cameras on all new vehicles after 2018. With the changes to meet NHTSA requirements came a programming change to default the reverse camera view. I'm not sure how that affects other regions.
I have started selecting the PDC button when i'm in a parking lot or getting ready to park and i just scroll over to hover on the reverse checkbox. When I go into reverse i can quickly press the idrive controller to switch to top view cameras. It's a hassle but a lot better than sitting in the middle of the street while fumbling through menus. |

This only works when pressing the PDC button or approaching an obstruction from the front. Like when I'm pulling into a parking spot forwards or into my garage, it starts up in the last used view (top view). But if you shift into reverse, it automatically defaults to the rear camera.

Are you located in the US? If you could find the setting it would be GREATLY appreciated.
Even if I shift into reverse and manually turn off the rear camera so that the top view cameras are shown, when i shift to 1st and back to reverse (without moving anywhere) it automatically changes back to the rear view camera. No matter what it won't stay in top view. |

I've complained about that in another thread as well. Also Europe here. Defaults to reverse. I got used to it in the meantime, but would love an option to default to Surround view.

Nope, unfortunately. Works perfectly on my 2010 X5, and it has top view cameras. It was definitely something that they changed and locked for the newer safety regulations.

This change was implemented around 2016, if your car is 2016+ or if your i-step level was updated after 2016 then you probably lost this feature.

First of all - it is called surround view just for the record.
Second - pushing the P console button does indeed activate surround view on all model-years. The problem is when you put the gearbox in reverse. That's when newer models default to rear-view camera. Very strange that your 2018 doesn't... 🤨 European or American?
