340i Agency Power Intake : Temperature test

First, I'd like to thank Mike from Extreme Power House for shipping these out to me quick. Took a day. Finally got around to installing it yesterday.

Alright so let's get into it.
Not too much info out there on the possible performance gain on these intakes but I've heard a few things including being prone to heat soak and having higher IAT's than the OEM intake. I was also worried because of the open design. However, decided to pull the trigger on it based on the sound clips I've heard. So I decided to conduct a mini test.

I have the bimmerlink app on my phone that I use in conjunction with a bluetooth obd2 connector to monitor the car's temps. (Oil, coolant, boost, IAT's, etc...)

Conditions for both intake tests are as follows : 58-60 degrees Fahrenheit ambient temp. Roughly 70% humidity. (These are current So. Cal evening conditions) Normal driving, 40-50mph.

Stock Intake
~70-75 degrees at speed.
~101-105 degrees after about 45 seconds to 60 seconds at a red light.

Agency Power Intake
~85-87 degrees at speed.
~112-117 degrees after about 45 seconds to 60 seconds at a red light.

Now, I am in no way an engineer so take it as you will. I'm just sharing my real world experiences as a customer who purchased a product. I tried my best to keep the same variables so conditions were very similar for both tests. Also used the same stretch of road, going both North and South. (not sure if that makes a difference but eh)

It does reach over 100 degrees here in So. Cal during the summer months so I will repeat this test once it gets hot. Would be interesting to see how this Agency Power will run once ambient temps are much higher.

Also planning to add the AFE intake scoops to guide the airflow. Will update the thread once I get that installed to see if it actually helps with supplying the intake with more air.

So here's my conclusion. I'm not writing this to bash on Agency Power or debunk any of their claims. At the end of the day, you as the buyer have a choice in what you want to buy for your car. Going into it, I was not expecting much of a performance gain but just did it for the sound. Honestly, the intake sounds intoxicating. All sorts of whooshing and turbo sounds. So personally, I can live with the ~10 degree difference compared to the stock intake.

Never understood why they're called cold air intake, when in reality they're hot air intakes.

They sound great and have better air flow, but that's about it. On stock turbo I don't think they really make a difference in performance, but I could see people on upgraded turbos (like myself) needing one as the stock airbox might be too restrictive. I'm currently running an AFE Power drop in filter along with the Williams Performance Inlet Pipe as I wanted more sound and flow, but without sucking in too much hot air.

Decent comparison. The issue with IATs is that the car either has to be moving or have fans running to show any improvement at idle. No matter what temps will rise when youre stopped since there's no airflow over the radiator. But the data while driving is very telling.

Another good metric would be MAF values.

My only concern with the scoops is that it'll pick up water too. I like that the OEM duct work is behind the grille where it *should* only pull air.

Thank you for taking the time to post data on the intake. From the other data I have seen, temp might be slightly higher but the car is making more power with open intakes due to higher airflow.

It would interesting to see a before/after dyno on a hot summer day.

eff80m3 Can you post your logs so we can see the MAF values before and after?

When I installed mine, I had the heat shield it comes with slightly out of position and it was enough to trigger a warning for high temp on the screen. After positioning the heat shield correctly the warning went away.

I also live in southern California and it gets warm and I can tell on hotter days the difference in performance for sure it is noticeable but I mean that would happen with any car really.

Do you guys keep the hot weather deflector/ram intake in place? or does it just flap about with no airbox in place?

There is a lot to be said about standard intakes these days.

I mean the heat shield is bolted down to the car and it has 2 points of contact. The intake piping also has a long support rod that goes into 1 of the points that the heat shield goes into so it does not flap about. When I tug on the intake, it's solid. Not sure what you're exactly trying to ask but hope that answered your question.

On the standard airbox, there is a ram intake/cool air snorkle that go's to the airbox (lower half) and gets its cold air from the front grill.

This is what i was asking if you keep in place? Wasnt sure with out the bottom half of the airbox that it was secure or would just fall out ?

Ah alright thanks for the clarification.
The Agency Power one gets rid of the entire OEM box all together. So the top and bottom piece.
I know that the BMS one, you retain the bottom half of your OEM box but not for this one.
And plus the heat shield for the AP one utilizes the the OEM intake box mounting hole. You just use the factory piece again to secure that heat shield in place.

It can be kept in place, but without a box it won't supply air directly to the filter. In this case the aftermarket intake scoops would probably be beneficial.
