Question Increase mp3 file index?

Morning guys

Firstly hello and thanks for having me 🤙🏻

I've just bought a bmw 2016 f30 and still playing with the various functions. One of which is that I've just installed a 2tb seagate external hard drive in the armrest. I have about 250gb of mp3 files structured root>genre>album.

My hdd format is currently fat32 and tries ntfs with same result.

Initially whe Its plugged in, I can see everything. After 15 minutes which I guess at this point the music is indexed, I loose the ability to see all genres and the info screen says 16000 tracks.

Anyone had this issue and how to get around it?

Tia guys
Steve

How about having 2 USB sticks with less than 16000 tracks on each?

I've got 500gb+ of MP3s, but tend not to have more than about 10,000 on a stick at a time.

Call me pedantic, but I'd rather them all on one hdd. I'd rather not have to keep unplugging Usb sticks.

Surely there is a way around this?

If I can stop the idrive from indexing, I'd be golden!

Thanks
Steve

Maybe someone with an understanding of the technical side of the MP3/headunit capabilities/operating system will be able to help further...I'm out of ideas

Thanks bud, appreciate your advice

Fustrates the life out of me and my OCD. Can't remember having this issue in my E90 CIC.

If anyone else has any ideas to try I'd be really grateful?

I read through a few other posts that mention deleting the recycle bin and sys vol data that windows leaves behind on an external hdd which I'll try tonight. And also mention folder structure so I'll try one folder called music and then sub folders will be the album name and artist.

I'm no stranger to coding (in the E90 anyway) and didn't know if the index limit could be lifted that way

Thanks
Steve

Same issue

I believe its a limitation of the head unit due to its ability to index and store the number of titles. Mine is ID4. The most I've ever been able to achieve was 15,997.

I've attempted different drive formats, drives, and cleaned up all extraneous files and jpgs with no success. After everything I knew what to do, I threw in the towel.

How about if you create different playlists, could that be used as a workaround?

Aside from the towel, what did you leave your hdd format set to? What do you mean by ID4? Apologies.

I think I'm fighting a loosing battle but really would like to have my music collection follow me around.

I've seen this mentioned before, a playlist per album you think? I guess I can create this on my computer before plugging into car.

Thanks for the help

Not sure what you mean by "Aside from the towel".

SSD actually, but have attempted both a portable HDD and SSD. I've attempted NTFS, and FAT32.

ID4 refers to the version of my NBT-EVO unit. It has 2GB of memory. Later versions have 4GB

I don’t have as many files as you but I keep the folder structure to a min and have playlists for specific genres of music as I like to have a mix of music.

I use a freeware MP3u playlist creator, the playlists go into the root of the drive and you will have to edit the playlist to ensure that the path to the actual track on the drive is correct, a simple search and replace is what I do.
