I've been trying to chase down a rattle when I shut my door and thought it was coming from my B-pillar but it turns out it is my side mirror wobbling on the base. If I lift up on the wing/side mirror it is loose on base. Does anyone know if there is a way to tighten something or how to fix this issue?

It's not loose on the base like the e46 fix suggests. If I lift up on the outer edge of the mirror with not much force the mirror teeters on the point where the base attaches to it.

I removed the little disk on the bottom of the base and it didn't look like there was anything to tighten.

Did anyone ever figure this out? My driver side is wobbly as well. It also engages the motor and clicks consistently for about 7-8 seconds when I push the lock button.

You can pop the glass and have a look inside.

I actually did this and couldn’t notice anything being off. I actually unplugged the electric motor. I guess I should pop it loose and take another look.

Maybe the gears are stripped? M539 restorations has done some rebuilds on various cars, it’s a little invasive iirc.

Is it closing opening at the same speed as the other side?

Before I unplugged it I don’t recall there being any difference in speed. It still worked, but for some reason when I would go to lock it, it wouldn’t fold up automatically. It would just spin its gears and twitch like it was going to fold,so you may be on to something. I just wonder how it still folded when the button was pressed on the door panel.

Hmm, maybe it’s catching some good gears sporadically. Since mirror housings are paint matched and can be separated I believe you could just replace the whole housing and a different motor.

From memory it might require removing the door card and speaker trim which isn’t terrible to do. The mirror itself is only held on by a few torx screws.

You can also test before full reassembly to make sure you don’t go too far if it’s not the motor.

I appreciate the insight. Do you by chance have the part number for the housing and motor?
I may try and disassemble and see if there is somewhere to tighten. The mirror housing has a gap where it connects to the base that it turns on so I’m hoping I could temporarily tighten it down enough so the wind doesn’t affect it while driving down the road.

I think there are going to be a couple part numbers but you could check the bay or your local pick and pull as early f30s are showing up in ours.

The online part database sites should help find the correct 11 digit BMW part number (old/new/succeeded part nbrs). Search using your VIN and it will helpful in finding the correct mirror. As mentioned already, there are multiple parts based on what type of mirrors you have (regular or auto dim) as well as what option pkgs you have. Select accordingly to get the correct part number. Once you have the correct part number, you can simply google the number to find vendors/dealerships that sell the part online…or you can call your local BMW dealership’s PARTS DEPT (not the service dept) to order the part or at least get a price check.

The diagram below can be found in the VEHICLE TRIM diagrams on either of the sites linked above. The part nbrs and other info used to determine which part number you need will be below the diagram if you go to the sites to look up the info.

This is the best way In the diagram you can see it's going to be several parts with the motor being one of the larger. Assuming everything else is salvageable from your car I was just alluding to the availability of second hand for that

Didn't even see you were from NC, where at?
