N20 Timing Chain & Oil Pump Change

After looking up my engine around the internet, it seems it has quite a bad rep for being unreliable; mainly due to timing chain reasons.

My F30 320i was registered back around June 2012 and currently has around 78,000 miles on it. I'm starting to get worried about if my timing chain's reaching the end of it's life and may snap and set me back a few grand for a new engine block or rebuild, so I'd rather just replace it now without waiting; was hoping to get the oil pump chain replace while I was at it as well.

I'm thinking of buying my own parts; so I know what's going into my car and it's a brand I can trust. (Currently looking at febi bilstein 38362 & 46140; these seem to be the updated parts that BMW used after 01/2015).

Does anyone happen to know a reliable garage/mechanic around the west midlands (UK) that can undertake this sort of work; and how much it may set me back?

If you don't have the characteristic whine there's no need to panic. There's a lot of evidence that points to the chain tensioner being the root cause of the eventual failure of the chain, and the replacement of the tensioner is neither difficult nor expensive. I'd change that and then keep listening for the whine.

Agreed with Billfitz above tensioner is a 30min job max. Try it out and if you still hear it most likely it’s the oil chain drive unit.

Alright, Thanks Guys.

Probably will replace the tensioner for now; getting quoted £2,000 for both timing & oil pump chain replacement (labour + parts).

I got it done around 2900 CAD$ for both labour and parts at a decent mechanic, and it took them 3 days to finish the job.

Wow that's a good price, I'm getting quoted $4500 CAD
Are you also in Toronto, if so would you mind sharing the mechanic?
Thanks in Advance!

Hi
Did you end up using febi parts? I’m in UK and looking at what parts to get for the timing chain and oil pump.
Thanks
