You're wrong. My car's stock M Double Spoke 400M staggered summer wheel/tires are:

Fronts: 18x8.0, 225/45 R18 (tire OD of 25.9" x 8.9" wide).

Rears: 18x8.5, 255/40 R18 (tire OD of 26.0" x 10.2" wide).

My square 17x8, 225/50 R17 winter set-up has a tire OD of 26.0" x 9.2" wide.

The ODs are almost exact between my 18" summer and 17" winter wheels/tires.

You are correct in saying a 225/50 17 will match a 225/45 18 or 255/40 18.

You are wrong in saying OEM is 225/45 / 255/40 18. These tires are over 3% the OEM size and I maitain the trade offs that come from such decision.

In any case, if that is true, then BMW sold the car with 2 different wheel/tire diameters (one for the 17" set and another, taller, for the 18"), which is weird to me. It could be though.

I test drove both. I have the xdrive. yThe difference is minimal for daily driving. On wet roads xdrive slides. xdrive is like RWD with nannies. If you try to misbehave too much, she'll put you straight... I wanted RWD but Canada did not offer one.

What's that about E90s? We're talking about F30 sizes, which are one step up in the circumference required, when compared to E90, just like everyone else has said.

There is no issue whatsoever running a tire that is 3% taller (or shorter) than stock so long as you run the same size on a given axle (or all four corners if AWD). The only side effect would be an error in indicated speed. But, since BMWs are calibrated with an optimistic bias, you may actually be making the indication more accurate.

Your second comment about that 5% delta in aspect ratio is losing sight of a key bit of information in the post you quoted - he's referring to his WINTER tires. Your comments are wholly redundant. I'll also add that, on public roads, you'll be hard pressed to find anyone that is able to discern any measurable difference in handling, braking, or feel if comparing a 45 series tire with a 50 series tire of the same section width and model.

It's great that you're such an expert, but you should probably refrain from offering opinions as fact unless you have data to back up your claims. Related, having read something on the internet does not make you an expert.

Never use all season in winter no matter what kind of drive u have!!!!awd is just for accelerating fast. Huge mistake not having winter tire

I tried both a 330D RWD and a 335D Xdrive (both 2015) and TBH I really couldn't tell much difference.

Between some previous cars I had it was night and day, between the Beemers not much in it.. The biggest thing to note was power delivery between the two engines.

I suppose if track days are your sort of thing then go for the RWD to get the tail out, apart from that choose whatever's cheaper / your happy with.

OEM size is 225/45-18. You are wrong.

The 225/50-17 is the correct size and what I'm running for my winters. TireRack's website also suggests this size.

I tested the 4 series before it was released. We drove them on the track for the day. The only difference was the xdrive had all seasons. The xdrive would slide a little more in the corners probably only because of the tires. Just make sure you get the sport set up with DHP and Summer's on your xdrive
