Hey everyone, this sound can very much be normal but I just wanted to see what you all think and if someone has experienced similar. In the past two weeks Ive noticed this very slight tapping/popping sound usually during a cold start. It seems like it's coming from the back left-ish corner of the engine. It's not the loudest and very hard to record well but if you get up close in person it's more distinct. In the video below, a moderate example of the sound can be heard at roughly 12 seconds and a little more pronounced one is at 16 seconds, followed by another moderate one right before the video ends. The car is a 2017 340ix with 42.5k miles and is totally stock besides an AP intake. I know how the B58 and DI sound with the normal ticking but the sound I'm referring to seems a tad different to me, unless I'm wrong. I'd very much appreciate any ideas or comments. TIA!

Doesn't sound like its in rhythm with the engine. Could be the plastic cover trim or maybe some hoses rubbing/hitting an adjacent part. It doesn't sound too serious. I'm surprised you even noticed it although it could be louder in person like you mentioned.

That is an idea I haven't looked Into! It is pretty quiet and I only heard it because after my intake install I was listening for every small noise imaginable 😂. After the car gets hot it is not there so It may be related to cold start processes which could explain it. I will likely take a look this weekend if there is anything loose but I appreciate it!

I guess it's time to turn up Spotify and put a louder exhaust to drown it out 😂

I hear the Evap system ticking which is normal. It changes its rhythm occasionally too. Not hearing any popping sounds but I am listening on a phone.

Thanks for the response, and yeah it isn't necessarily rhythmic with anything so my guess is it's something evap based. I'll just have to keep an eye on it and see if anything gets louder or worse

That is what BMW direct injection sounds like. I hate it the sound, but it is a thing of beauty.

I agree! Also just a friendly PSA if you haven't done the throttle body adaptation reset it will change the cars response for the better! I did it thinking it may help the sound and so far it seems like it did as well as rewaking the car up.
