So I had a good 450 mile run this weekend. Now on a steady 80mph cruise control I reckon it was giving me about 45 to the gallon. But I just couldn't help myself a few times - ending up rather deep into the 3 figure speeds at times and blasting it in sport around some nice twisty roads.

So given that mix it gave me about 39mpg over the 450 odd miles. There were about 4 litres left so if I'd drained it I'd have gone 480 - which is not bad given the style of driving for the trip.

I can believe the 500 miles before needing a fuel up on economical driving. I'd love to be able to try the 550 mark one day when I can inflict some self control...

btw we had a bit of a rolling drag race from 70 upwards between me and an E90 330d pre LCi. The F31 pulled ahead and stayed there, but not by a huge amount. Slowed again when I scarily realised we were about to hit 140 - it felt so composed! One of my passengers asked if we were doing over a hundred... Need to watch for that - and set my speed warning so I don't drive silly.

No the best idea to discuss driving at those speeds on a public forum as you never know who's reading

I doubt it would make any difference.. Jeremy Clarkson has admitted to speeding excessively on T.V and he seems to be ok.

You make your choice and "take your chances" personally I would not want to admit to anything "recordable".

i did a return trip to Yeovil yesterday from Bedfordshire... first long run in the car...
I was eager to see what I would get mpg wise. Although the trip down was rubbish... M25 & M4 traffic.. I still got 62mpg as recorded for the 209 miles... on the way back less traffic so I could cruse better... set that to 79... tried to keep below 80!!.. got 63.4..
would never see that in my old Audi

haha - indeed. Moving from a 25mpg-at-best audi A3 3.2 quattro even averaging 36 due to heavy right foot is great!

I will add that I've just come back from a 55 mile trip, mixed roads including start/stop urban areas, average speed of 29MPH and it has averaged over 55MPG! Very impressed and after 1K miles my overall average is over 46MPG.

As someone who has never had any trouble in meeting a quoted MPG when driving in the most efficient way possible, I am wondering what I have to do to get my 330D to return over 40MPG. A 200 mile roundtrip, mostly motorway in Eco Pro and rarely exceeding 70, combined with a bit of b road blasting in between (about 50 miles total), my average was about 37. Mixed driving with occasional bits of heavy throttle keeps it at 37. So far the car has done about 700 miles so maybe it will loosen up a bit. My experience is that to get it to average even 40 (nevermind 50) on any meaningfully long stretch requires me to drive in a way that is totally unrealistic, and in a way that I will never, ever do.

I imagine you have a tight example of the model, and need a few miles on it to get it running more efficiently. But agree that many of us who could easily return the combined figures a few years back, find it impossible these days. At one time I could easily exceed the combined figures in my typical driving, long term, but no way with these latest hyped up figures.

We've got to remember the official figures are even more detached from reality in each new generation of designs, as the cars are setup to get the figures from light driving.

Mid 40's is a realistic average for the F30 330d, in average driving. An improvement over the E90 models, but mpg shortfall is climbing as an average.

What are people getting with a F31 330d xDrive.
I'm getting an average of 37mpg, best being 41mpg on a long boring run on the M4. Have achieved 62mpg cruising on the motorway at 55mph following a lorry using the radar cruise control. I find it very hard not to stray into the sport mode and enjoy the acceleration.
