F31 Brake Upgrade

I've got an F31 M Sport but for some reason the brake kit is the standard 330mm discs not the 340mm M Sport version. One of the front calipers needs replacing, so I was wondering if it's possible to bolt the larger set of calipers, discs and pads straight on, either the 340mm M Sport or 370mm M Performance ones.

Does anyone know if this is possible?

Thanks

What's your budget for the brake upgrade project?

Yes. Both options fit bolt on.

M Sport refers to the bumpers on the car. M Sport Brakes come blue from the factory. What model car do you have.

When you say that you have 330mm brakes are you referring to the front or the rear or both? You could have F330/R330 or F340/R330 or F330/R300. Front 330's are actually 330mm x 24mm and Rear 330's are actually 330mm x 20mm. So that can't be moved front <-> rear.

If you have rear 330, you can install front 340 or 370, but you will need to code the front/rear brake bias to match. I would not install Front 340 or 370 with the smallest 300mm rear brakes. That might be dangerous.

I'm fairly open on this, do you know what options are available and what sort of cost would be involved?

It's a 2014 F31 330D M Sport, with silver calipers. It has F330/R330 currently. Using a Vin decoder it has M Sport suspension but not M Sport brakes. If I put the reg into eurocarparts or GSF it comes back as 'without M Sport brakes' and 'without Performance brakes' also, which supports this.

Okay, that makes sense. The F330/R330 combination is relatively rare. I've only heard of it coming on diesel models. The Rear 330's, rather than 300's, provides the opportunity to easily upgrade just the front calipers.

370's can be found in blue (M Sport from factory) and red, orange or yellow (M Performance from BMW aftermarket). Typically used pairs are $550-$650.

340's can be found in blue (M Sport from factory paired with rear 345) and Grey (standard brakes on models like 335i/435i, 340i/440i, paired with rear 330) Ive seen them used between $350-$550 with blue at the higher end of the scale and Grey at the lower end. Simply because of color not function.

A set of front grey 340's is perfect for you because they will match your grey rear 330's. You won't have to paint. And they will definitely upgrade your brakes going from single piston to four piston front calipers.

I guarantee that there are a lot of Grey 340's just sitting on garage shelves after guys with the cars listed above upgraded their brakes. Advertise that you are looking for a set of grey front Brembos and you'll find some.

Note: you can install front 370's because the brake bias is the same for 370/330 and 340/330. But if you are going to spend more money for 370's and caliper painting, you might as well buy a whole set of F370/R345 for maybe $1,100-$1,200.

Anytime that you upgrade from front single piston 330 or 312, to Brembo 4-piston 370 or 340 you must have the new front to rear brake bias coded in the car. The coding is simple but dealers charge a fortune to do it. You can't do it with an application like BimmerCode. It requires a dealer application. It takes maybe 20 minutes. This is another thing to advertise that you are looking for on local forums. Try calling local BMW shops.

I highly suggest getting full crossdrilled front rotors. (Not noisy dimpled or slotted) They have best bite and are best in rain. That's why BMW installs them on M3/M4. Zimmermann sells them. I often see them just on fronts because fronts do the majority of the stopping. Common on Mercedes.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the detailed reply, that helps a lot.

I'm going to look into the 340s up front and leave the rears as they are currently. Unfortunately there's aren't loads of second hand sets for sale in the UK. A set of front 340 calipers are around £400 (~$530) or a full set of calipers, discs and pads can be had for ~£700 (~$850). Is it just a straight swap of the calipers or is there any brackets that need changing also?

There are these brand new for (£250 for a front set), but I'm not sure on the quality of the manufacturer called A.B.S:

https://www.buycarparts.co.uk/bmw/3-...%5B0%5D=BREMBO

I've got a decent independent close by who should be able to code the bias hopefully.

I wouldn't touch those ABS calipers. I assume they are cheap Asian knockoffs. Wouldn't chance it with a safety item like brakes.

All F3x brake calipers use the same mounting holes so they are just bolt on with no brackets.

Believe me, the number of used calipers actively listed for sale is a fraction of the number available. Most guys swap out a part and the old one sits in their garage. You have to post on local BMW groups exactly what you are searching for. Someone will see it and respond that they have it.

I've taken a bunch of things off my car and sold about half of them. I don't think I've posted any for sale. I just responded when a guy said he was looking for something.

Cheers, I thought as much about ABS. I'll stick with OEM ones, when I can find a pair locally.

Thanks very much for your help.
