Question Installed ER Chargepipe and Running Into Issues

Hey all. I installed an ER chargepipe today on my F30 N26 (328i). This car is also running BM3 Stage 1 91 Octane.

It seems ever since I installed the chargepipe my engine is putting out less overall power. Boost leak or vacuum leak was my first thought but I have looked over the lines and connections around the chargepipe and everything seems good. I made sure to install the OEM O rings into the new chargepipe along with the MAP sensor so it's probably not that either. I did slightly chip one of the O rings but it didn't seem like it was significant enough to prevent a seal.

I decided to do some data logging.

Logs: http://www.bootmod3.net/log?id=5d479de7ae729b5812b0135a

Turns out, my car seems to be hitting target PSI according to BM3 logs (+- 1.5 PSI) which means probably no boost leak. There are a couple of lines where boost pressure was 4 to 5 psi below target, but there are also lines where boost pressure was 2-3 above target.

The car seems to be a little sluggish now and it definitely takes longer for the boost to kick in. BM3 stage 1 now feels like stock driving. Also, my instant MPG reading on the dash now jumps all over the place from 1 mpg to 99.9 mpg and tends to hover around 50mpg which is obviously impossible. At other times on low RPMs, it shows a 13-15 mpg reading.

I'm thinking it might be the MAP or MAF sensor so I ordered a new MAP sensor as well as a MAF cleaner, but not sure if this will solve the issue. If anyone has any other ideas or experience with this issue, advice is appreciated.

The charge pipe (assuming MAF sensor is OK) does not influence the fuel mixture or anything related to ignition timing. Could it be a coincidence and the root cause could be BM3 Stage 1 related?

Maybe. I didn't notice this until now either, right after I installed the charge pipe. It definitely feels less responsive. Boost still kicks hard but it takes longer to get there. Very sluggish compared to before.

I was using WD40 while installing and some (although unlikely) may have gotten on the MAP sensor. I'm going to attempt to clean it and if that doesn't work I will put a new one in. Same with the MAF sensor.

Maybe unrelated but I have heard a loud whistle when I accelerate for a while now.

double check that the OEM o-rings are oriented properly. the flap should be pointed away from the connection.

also the that o-ring barb flap is quite delicate and can tear easily. i believe just a small tear can cause the squeal and possibly boost problems.

Gotcha. I tore one of the o rings a little (intercooler to chargepipe) when installing. Gonna go back and put a new one

Cleaned MAF but boost still seems to kick a little less than before. Car definitely runs smoother though; I think my K&N oiled filter may have caused some buildup.

I'm replacing my MAP this weekend and if that doesn't work I'm checking the O rings. Really don't want to have to pull that chargepipe out again

I'm going to replace my DV with a GFB DV+ and see how that helps. Heard that's a PITA to install but screw it, I want big boost

Also probably going to do a smoke test soon just to be sure of no boost leaks.

It is......but it's worth it.

Yeah that's what I've heard, that it gets rid of that power slump between shifts and the boost is more constant.

UPDATE: so I pulled the chargepipe and the o rings look fine, but I'm not sure I have them the right way in (photos attached) anyone know the correct direction these are supposed to go in?

What do you mean by barb flap? The o rings both have a small slit on one side. On the throttle body ring the other side is flat. On the intercooler ring the other side is a v shape.

the illustration is not done by me, however it is good enough to understand the orientation of the o-ring.

Thanks for the reply.

Did some research (basically zooming in on a kiesmotorsports video) and for the IC o ring the end with the slit around it is supposed to go on facing the IC, and for the throttle body o ring the end with the slit is supposed to go on facing the throttle body.

I also made sure to grease up the o rings before throwing the chargepipe back on to prevent any bending

Seen a definite improvement in throttle response since doing that, but it's still having a little trouble holding boost at times. Not happening as often but it's there for sure. I did some more research and this is a common issue with tuned N20/N26s, just seems to be a part of tuning the boost system that's inevitable

Gonna throw that DV+ on when it gets here and we'll see how that changes things.

On another note, WTF is this sound

Heard this while working on the chargepipe several times every 30 seconds or so then it stopped.

It may have been louder because I had the charge pipe off. I have heard this while driving as well but passed it off as some random beeping (sound was highly muffled)

That doesn't sound good.

Turns out the sound was something to do with the AC compressor. Not something to worry about, just an annoyance

Thinking about going with BM3 on my F31. Curious, did the DV+ work well for you and allow you to get full benefits of the stage 1 tune? Thx

If your current DV is working properly there is no evidence that putting in a DV+ provides any benefit. After asking several resellers the DV+ is considered necessary when upgrading your turbo to sustain heavy boost on shifts. For stock turbo, even when tuned not a noticeable benefit while the original DV is working correctly. I’m sure many on here will disagree with me but they cannot provide any facts to support their case.
