I ended up removing the clamp and plugging in the Quadlock without it, until now it`s still plugged in well. Chri |

Guys, I've been following this topic for some time now. I didn't order my unit yet as I'm in the process of finding out who is actually manufacturing these and trying to get in touch with these people direct. It has been difficult so far and I have not much to report. I thought that NaviFly would be able to provide some more light, but when I asked for full android ROM they replied "no support give the the source". Dead end I guess... I'm trying to modify kswplauncher.apk but it would be really handy to have the full ROM and run it in "virtual machine" just to test things. I'm working on some layouts, custom graphics and corrections to translation. So far I have been successful with graphic, found source of some of the texts that are appearing here are there, and now I'm trying take apart these layouts... not the easiest thing for an android studio noob.
Anyway, if any of you would like to have some custom graphics made, I might be able to help with - at least I can do that for community. I've been also toying with an idea of redesigning the screen itself - the plastic bit I mean. It's all good for you guys with tablet like screen where all is accessible, but for us with E60/E63/E90, these cars were never designed to have touchscreens so it is all recessed and hard to operate will driving. I'm thinking of designing a fully 3d printable face plate that will bring the screen to front. That would require taking off the original screen frame and voiding warranty (if there is any). I can do it for E63 but I'm not sure how this would apply to E60 and E90. Did anyone of you thought about that? |

Is it not possible to run the OTA Update ? as it also has a boot.img within ? for me it seem`s its a full image, but i`m not that android specialist. to the 3D printed, i`m just doing the same at my E87, i`m using a E90 display for that It`s alot of work , but may be less on your E63 as you have a surrounding and maybe a 10.25" will fit there. I will do a quick cardboard mock-up, take some pictures and measurements, make a pdf or something so you can print that out, cut and see if that fits for E60 as well. Should have this ready later on this afternoon. From there I can start modeling a new frame.

The problem that you have to solve is how you will bolt the new frame to th dashboard since again as you come outside the dash becomes thinner. |

@ Koutsouk, that would be no problem, as the original display has to be removed anyways an adapter can be made to mount on the original position and goes forward to the new position. but that is going now a little bit far off-topic Chri |

Very quick and rough mock-up. The idea is to reuse top part (probably easier to redesign than to chop off), but that leaves top vents and mounting points. Screen is moved forward by about 65-70mm, doesn't look like a lot, but I can reach every corner of it sitting comfortably. I will start modeling face of it, but can't really move any further with proper dimensions of both 8.8" and 10.25" screens. Then I have to design all fixing points for the screen and PCBs.
There are some good pictures of CIC E90 unit on Github but no use without dimensions. |

is there a way to root the OTA firmware update? I read some tricks about magisk but can someone point me to the right direction to have root?
I'm currently on 2.3.5 and planning to update to 2.8.3 and thinking about use my mobile to patch che boot.img in the OTA zip, then replace in the zip and upgrade the headunit. Should this work or am I missing something? thank you Last edited by floc; 10-21-2019 at 09:31 AM.. |

Theoretically it should be possible to extract the boot.img from the OTA zip, patch that using Magisk Manager and repack the patched boot.img to the OTA zip and apply the update.
But no one ever tested this and without fastboot access there might be no coming back in case of errors. Regarding the update functionality (file on USB in OEM folder): Is this done by the MCU or by the Android board itself? |

But, coming back to my question: Will this method still work with a (potentially) broken boot.img?
If yes, then the update is done by the MCU, right? |

unfortunately I don't know. I used to get out from a stucked android security lockscreen pin.
EDIT: and I don't think to try... Original boot.img is 64mb (65536) Patched one is 15mb... Maybe has some kind of slack space Last edited by floc; 10-21-2019 at 10:21 AM.. |

Correct, I just checked and unpacked the original boot.img. The file itself is 64MB while the unpacked files are only ~15MB of size.
In theory it should be safe to flash, but ROM building and co is outside of my expertise. |

Hi!
Head unit with Snapdragon 4gb RAM + 64gb have build-in DSP? This device: https://ru.aliexpress.com/item/4000144842180.html have app "Ampliefer" and perfect equeliser. Maybe someone knows how I can install custom equeliser like: Viper4Android or "Ampliefer"? Default equeliser has only three band. |

We need "system" apps like ViPER4Android. Other cheap and old headunits(from Aliexpress on other cars) have DSP. I think, that China developers don't use other technology in the BMW Android Head Unit. |
