Can (should) I replace a single tire?
I got a screw stuck in the outside tread of my tire. Shop said that they cannot repair it because it's too close to the sidewall. Thoughts?
If I do replace it, the rears are at 6/32. Do I need to replace both rears or all four because it is an x drive? Fronts are at 7/32. Thanks! |

Even if xdrive, do NOT need to change all four however that tire will always be the oddball.
Changing two tires would be better. Put it at the rear for stability, if max braking. I'm not saying you should do this, but tbh i've used a tire plug there before. Of course, the financial savings will never be worth a high speed blowout so do it at your own risk. If you're not comfortable, change the tire. |

I would let the tread depth be the guide on how many tires you have to replace.
xDrive requires all the tire circumference be within a certain percentage of each other. Two new tires is best bet financially, but those brand new tires may have enough tread compared to the other two which would put them out of the tolerance range. Years ago when I owned a Subaru I got a sidewall puncture that lead to all four being replaced. At the time, trying to find someone to shave the new tires to match what was already on the car wasn't an option.

You are allowed to have different diameter tires still with x-drive. That is the tolerance you are talking about. 2/32" difference between new rears and old front wont cause an issue.

I would try to plug it yourself....its just a screw and there is room....keep it on the back of the vehicle .....when your tires need replacing do all four
And don't worry that a garage will not do it....its too much liability for a $25 10 minute job so they decline |

I had one even closer to the sidewall. Had a few chain tire shops refuse. Went to a high rated local "mom and pop" tire shop and they did a plug/patch for $20 in about 30 minutes, including dismount, rebalance, and remount. So just go to a different place. I drove on that tire for 10k miles before i replaced my whole set. It was also a RFT, some shops refuse to patch those.

Realized that I never closed the loop on this, but I wound up replacing both rears. The prorated 50% off the tire back.
Thanks for all the advice! |

Before I replaced anything, I would be attempting to plug. Will be super easy considering the location... dont even need to remove the tire for this one.
Ive had good luck with the Harbor Freight kit that you can get for $5. Worst case you will end up with an annoying super slow leak and decide to replace later. Guaranteed to buy you some time at least and no risk of catastrophic failure or anything like that. |

I just replaced one tire due to a nail. Found the same tires I had with similar wear on utires.com
