MOT and Brake Pads
I was told on recent garage visit that rear pads are 90% worn, got MOT comming up soon, do you think this will be simply flagged as advisory?
The wear sensor has not been activated.

Sounds to me like a mechanic eyeballing, rather than actually measuring. If your pads were actually 90% gone, the wear sensor would have triggered. BMW purposely triggers with a lot of pad left. You could continue to drive for months. I have the numbers somewhere but not committed to memory

As above, I can't see how the wear sensor would not have tripped with only 10% pad material left.
Either the wear sensor is faulty or there is more than 10% left. Stick a torch in and see if you can see any pad, if you can visibly see any material I would wager its more than 10%. As others have said though, just get them done as they need to be done at some point and eventually they will start eating into the discs |

It's easy to do a visual check yourself on the brake pads, just check yourself, I've had garages tell me they are worn but once I had look myself there was loads of pad left.

A friend of mine (who owns an mot centre) had a ride in my 6 year old 330d as I needed all the wheel lock nuts removed after I broke the lock key, and he noticed a problem with my brakes.
Turns out all the msport discs, particularly the front were badly damaged with corrosion mostly on the side covered with the guard plate. New discs and pads all round sorted it. Brakes are now great, but my point is that I got no warnings from any pad sensors, but an mot advisory before that. First spend on pads or discs in 6 years. Can't complain really. This is the guidance used to assess brake pads during an MOT.
One thing to bare in mind is that the car only has a sensor on one pad out of four on each axle, so it is possible for one to be below 1.5mm and receive a 'dangerous' rating. This would usually happen if a pad was sticking. You can drive your car away with a 'major' fail rating if the current MOT is still valid. You can't drive it away with a 'dangerous' fail rating though. |
