Over torqued Oil pan drain bolt N55
Well, I think I have over torqued the oil pan drain bolt. Just finished the oil change and when tightening the bolt it just never gets to spec and keeps turning. I then added the new oil as I needed to drive today. Ran the engine for a bit and I really don't see any leaks but I know it may be a future issue. I'm still cpo for a year and wondering advice. Changing out the oil pan might cost over 1k and I'd like to avoid that for now.
No idea if it's the bolt or the pan I'm tempted to bring it to bmw and have them tell me my options after I ask for an oil change in about a month... Any advice would be welcome Thank you!

Shoot, I'm not sure at this point. I just put about 80 miles on the car and it must have a very small couple drips of a leak as I saw a little oil on the bolt... I drive about a mile to work and back weekdays so I could milk if for some time trying to find a solution.

Just keep and eye on your oil level. If it's not dripping too much then wait it out until it's time for your oil change. Make sure to clean up any oil residue on the belly tray and oil pan then take it in. When they try to tighten the nut they run into the same issue and might take the blame for it and replace your pan for free. The only other option you have is to weld a nut to it or tap threads for a larger bolt.

good luck OP. I feel like they won't cover and they'll try to say it wasn't a defect and due to error.
you can try to put a helicoil in it.

Did the same thing with my oil pain and ended up having a shop rethread the bolt with a bigger one. The problem is fixed for now but if it happens again, I will probably need an oil pan. Live and learn, I guess.

The questions is how are you guys over torquing the bolt? Shitty torque wrench or no torque wrench at all?

**Update - Found an independent shop that exclusivity works on German performance cars and they are going to do the following, (Oil Change , New Oil pan Gasket, New Bolts and Mill the drain plug hole ( helicoil or threadsert ) all for $807 and a 2 year 24,000 mile warranty on the work. I feel that's the best move at this point.

I had this damage done to my car at a reputable corporate tire&lube shop. Luckily I fought with them until they agreed to cover the cost of repairs done at a bmw dealership, but they never gave me any information, just a check. I guess they just cranked the bolt too hard, or maybe the guy didn't observe the torque spec at all. Either that or it's pretty easy to do if you aren't careful, as the folks in this thread seem to indicate. I never did one myself on this car, so I don't know. The car only had 2 oil changes prior to that one, both at the dealership who leased it to the prior owner.

I'm sure they're getting small profits from this job, but probably will gain OP as a forever customer, they know his warranty is gonna run out in the future, and recommendations, win win

It's a good quote. I bet they are trying to gain me as a client. I told them i'm new to the area so I feel like that is the play. I asked them about future work with some mods and they seemed accommodating. As a reminder they are only dropping pan, oil change, drill out old threads in pan and repair with helicoil or drill new threads, new gasket, new mounting bolts and oil. They stated it will all be done with OEM parts not to hurt my warranty. I feel 807 was fair for all that. New oil pan alone cheapest I have seen is $689. Next mod is paint correction and Ceramic Coating. :-D
