Apple CarPlay

Hi all,

I just bought a 2017 430i xDrive Gran Coupe, which says it has CarPlay. I paired my phone and can play music via Bluetooth, but I don't see the CarPlay option under ConnectedDrive when I add a new device. I've trying to figure it out and I am reading that I may have to subscribe to some kind of service from BMW or get something like this: https://www.bimmer-tech.net/blog/ite...trofit-carplay

Can someone shed some light before I go to the dealer?

Thank you!

Check your VIN to make sure that you have CarPlay. CarPlay connect using WiFi instead of Bluetooth. If you have the option, you do not need to subcribe. The CarPlay subscription scheme is for BMW model year 2019+.

If you have the "WiFi Analyzer" apps (Android), you should see the car WiFi signal in the 2.4 GHz band while car is running, the SSID is BMWxxxxxxx.

Thanks for the quick response. I went to this site: https://www.mdecoder.com and it says my VIN has CarPlay. I didn't see the car have its own Wi-Fi when I checked, but I'll scan again and wait longer to see if it shows up. Thanks again!

Did you subscribe to CarPlay? Just because your vehicle has it doesn't mean it's active.

In the media menu choose manage mobile devices; then choose your phone in the next menu; then select car play.
In my car the phone connects to a wifi signal (BMW Car Play + nnnnn) numbers from VIN and also connects to bluetooth

Just a question.... I haven't seen CarPlay in action... question is CarPlay does everything, can it pull up maps on the dashboard? Or is this just streaming music?

I had a Chevy rental a few weeks ago with CarPlay. It didn't work thru BlueTooth; you needed to plug into the USB port. Same with BMW?

CarPlay can mirror mirror certain apps only, which include Apple Maps, Waze and Google Maps to the nav screen.

I have not. I just bought the car used. Do you do this through a dealer or online?

I tried both. None worked for me (yet).

You do it online at the ConnectedDrive website

Mine works with wifi. I think it can work connected on usb, there's that option in my menu when an iphone is connected. YMMV.

Car play gives you an option for Nav. Most of the time I find it's better to use the BMW nav because of the dashboard integrationif nothing else. WAZE is v good at working out where the traffic is though, so in cities it's handy to be able to use it.
Car play (BMW) is v safe too - it won't allow you to read messages on screen, but will do a good job (in conjunction with siri) reading them to you. It will read whatsapp too, play spotify songs / lists and use any other carplay compatible apps.

The first gen car play was wired, the newer cars have wireless car play. Since it is a 2017 it may be the wired version.

I have CarPlay and like it a lot. Now that I have it on my 2018, I probably would want it on any other new cars I would buy. Being able to call and listen to texts hands free is great. You can also text hands free if needed. With 3 kids calling and texting me chauffeur instructions this is handy. I know those are standard features of car play, but those are great for me. I sometimes listen to music via car play, especially when no one is the car and I need to feed my inner metal head. For the Nav feature, every one seems to have a different ways to use it. I like using BMW nav because it shows up on my HUD and the directions in big cities with multiple lanes for merging seems best on HUD. The map shows exactly which lane you need to be in when merging or driving in cities such as Dallas, Houston, New Orleans, etc. which I frequently travel too. On the other hand if you are with friends, family and someone sends you a location via a text you can easily use the iPhone maps and get to where you need to go. You can send the directions via the BMW Connected app or search hands free on the BMW nav too. When traveling I use both to double check routes and traffic. With kids that travel a lot for soccer, we are often on highways and back roads and having two sources of traffic info and search engines for alternative routes is super handy and has saved me countless hours of sitting on the highway. Anyway, just my use of the two nav features and how I integrate iPhone with BMW.

I'm trying to register for CarPlay on the ConnectedDrive website, but I get stuck trying to add a car. Created the account, adding my VIN and when it says it's sending a verification code to the car, I never receive it.

Looks like my car's production date was 2016-09-12. It does say this on the decoder as well: "S6CPA APPLE CARPLAY VORBEREITUNG", which I'm assuming it means it supports CarPlay. Looks like it's an early 2017 model? It was sold to me by a dealer as 2017 with CarPlay.

I'll try the BMW assist and see if they can sort it out or visit a dealer, unless anyone has any suggestions?

It is a good addition but it will not push navigation maps or instructions to your instrument panel or hud. I like the text features using Siri. What I dont like is often times while my wife is using her iphone as passenger weird things happen. Just took an 8 hour trip and it kept switching from listening to sirius radio to pandora from her phone. We couldnt figure it out so there are some kinks in it hopefully will be settled with updates to both phone and car.
