10k maintenance dealer or nah?

Just shy of 10k miles and apparently the car automatically made an appointment for me at the local BMW dealer

Do you guys take car into the dealer or is this just an oil change I can get anywhere ?

iDrive will tell you what item(s) are due for service - likely it is just an oil change.

Why would you pay $125 or so for something that will be free at the dealer?

If you have the maintenance package, which everyone does, oil changes are no charge and are due every 10k miles or 12 months, whichever comes first. You should be aware of this and all of the other items covered.

Your dealer should have told you all about it when you took delivery.

Correct the I drive will tell you when to bring in the car and have the dealership schedule appointment. Scheduled maintenance is free for 3 years 36k miles.

The caveat to this rule is if you brought the car second hand then there is no maintenance just new car warranty

If it is older than 2015 maintenance is transferrable to the new owner. But those cars are nearing the end of their free maintenance anyway. Newer cars that had pre-paid maintenance upgrade can also have their free maintenance transferred to the new owner.

It's free if you bought your car new, so why wouldn't you?

How? There's no way the dealer didn't tell you this during delivery. They are very clear about telling you the date free maintenance expires.

And as it approaches how to extend it, for a substantial fee.

I have perhaps the only example of buying a used LCI and getting the last year of the 50k mile maintenance warranty. (its 35k miles now I think.) This was possible because while the car was used it was a BMW employee (in finance I think) so I am technically the first owner. Kind of cool.

The sales rep I got my car from was not too happy because he told me there was 4,000$ off for no reason and I said are you sure? He said yes we shook hands, then he said that discount was for leases only he made a mistake, so I raised hell and talked with the manager and got them to honor it, he was pissed lol and to top it off I bought my car as they were closing for the night so they were doing a rush job, they couldn’t even find a damn 10mm ratchet to take the plates off my trade in :|

Bimmer456 I was speaking of buying a 2017 used and not from dealership. I was figuring that at 10k this was a newer car. That is where the caveat gets ya. Ask me how I know. Lol. You are correct about pre paid being transferred but for a fee of course.

NON-TRANSFERABILITY

These maintenance programs are available to the exclusive benefit of the initial purchaser, owner, or lessee of a new vehicle, sales demonstrator vehicle, Aftersales Mobility Program vehicle, or BMW Group company vehicle from an authorized BMW center in the United States (including Puerto Rico). Coverage is not transferable to subsequent purchasers, owners, or lessees. The sole exception to the non-transferability of coverage is that household transfers—transfers within the United States (including Puerto Rico) to members of the household of the initial purchaser, owner, or lessee of a BMW vehicle from an authorized BMW center—will not terminate coverage. Household transfers are limited solely to transfers to a current or former spouse or spousal equivalent, child, sibling, parent, grandparent, or grandchild from the initial purchaser, owner, or lessee of a vehicle.

You could try CPO as this will give you an extended warranty as opposed to just the remaining factory warranty. With such low mileage though the price would be nearly the same as new versus getting it cheaper non-cpo. The lower mileage CPO is also CPO elite which is the opposite of what it sounds like, not quite as good a warranty but with so few miles the amount of warranty you're actually getting after factoring in current mileage it probably is better than the standard CPO. You would have to pay extra to get the maintenance as it isn't transferrable, or you could say it's transferrable with a fee but that's just semantics, you have to pay extra to get pre-paid maintenance. They did recently change the CPO warranty however and are doing what Mercedes is doing where it is just 1 year more than the factory warranty with unlimited mileage, so not sure how this affects CPO elite or if that goes away and it's just the 1 year (or maybe elite is 6 months?) don't know on that. You could probably pay extra to get an extra year for warranty or maintenance. Also, CPO has a $50 deductible for warranty work, not sure about maintenance.
