435 xdrive Exhaust

Just bought a 2016 435 coupe with 15,000 miles. I want to improve the exhaust sound and don't want any drone. Any input on the Borla Atak system? I've heard good sound from just a Rev9 axle back but have a feeling it probably drones. Any input is appreciated!

The MPE is pretty decent without being too loud. It comes with the exhaust valve as part of the exhaust. You can get the chrome or carbon Fiber Tips. I had it on my 2014 335i and no drone but Wife thought it was too loud in the morning start up. The other is the Dinan which I have heard and it is a deep growl. Both of the above are axle back so they retain the mid-pipe muffler. These can be found used on the classified section, good luck!

If you are concerned about drone, my 2 cents worth:
1) Leave the midpipe resonator in (just get an axle back).
2) Get an exhaust with the left flap in, or get the flap welded into your new exhaust. I did that to my Active Autowerke since I found it way too loud during light throttle acceleration.

Any opinions out there on the M sport performance exhaust (axle back)??

I installed a M2 muffler on my 435 xdrive and love it. using my JB4 I can control the exhaust valve to operate like the stock setup or open all the time. it sounds so much better than the stock muffler and looks great with the quad tips.

Are you asking about MPE, or just the M sport exhaust that comes with the M sport package? I had that, and it's really tame in sound.

I'm extremely happy with the sound/tone of the Active Autowerke. It coupled with the ER catted DP has a really nice growl when you ask for it, quiet during cruise.

I think downpipe should be your first option; personally I'd just go catless since it seems like no CEL is ever guaranteed.. Then I'd go with a valved rear muffler such as Valvetronic; it allows you to be pretty much straight piped when open and then super quiet when closed. I even deleted my resonator and it still sounds pretty damn quiet when closed.

My car has the M sport package so I assume it has the M sport exhaust. I am looking for a more aggressive sound minus the drone because it is my daily commuter.

Long time BMW guy. New to the modification scene. Down pipe does seem like a good place to start. Easy install or not so much? Basically I'm looking for a solid air intake and muffler/exhaust combo. Want to have a great exhaust and turbo sound. I won't be doing anything other than that and appearance changes.

You could definitely do it yourself on jack stands on a driveway for sure but if you know anyone with a lift or that can just give you an extra hand it makes it a lot easier. Probably would take 2 hours or so with some experience wrenching; my mechanic (work at a dealership) did it for me in less than an hour. Gonna be a pain to put OEM on every time for emissions test but tbh I'd rather just do that once a year then spend 1200$+ for a downpipe that might eventually throw a code anyway. I decided to not go with an intake as it seems like a lot of people have rough starts that leads back to a poorly designed MAF holder. So I did the MPPK stock air box mod and drilled a couple holes ABOVE the filter for some added noise.

Ahhh.. ok, then you just have to cut it off and replace it with another axle back.

Others have cut out the mid-pipe resonator (adds drone), or replaced the down pipe. The DP will make is sound better, but the axle back is the best way to get the aggressive sound.

I was in the same boat as you and didn't want it insanely loud. With the Active Autowerke it was brutal until I put the exhaust valve back in the left tip. When the rear doors were open, the cold start was deafening in the cabin. Now, its really quiet until you go to sport mode and make it work. I really like it now, but I was regretting life choices prior to putting that valve in.

Nice thing about the Active Autowerke is the left tip is a stainless elbow that you need to clamp in the hole. If you are DIY, and don't have a welder, its easy to take that to a shop and have them weld in the old OEM valve.

Here's my post and video on MPE, same car as yours, also, it sounds better now after the initial break-in period.

Great video! I think you persuaded me. Do you know if the MPE voids warranty? Not that I have much longer on the warranty, just curious. Where did you pick up your MPE? Thanks!

I called SunMotors BMW in Mechanicsburg, PA, spoke with folks in parts department and they sent me a paypal quote and shipped the exhaust the same day, for $900, might be cheaper now. Got it installed for $60 at a local indy shop, takes 20 minutes. As MPE is a BMW part it should not void any warranty, technically you have to get it installed at a dealer but it never really causes any warranty issues, check if your dealer will install it for a reasonable price. They did fix my misfire under warranty after I had the exhaust installed and didn't even mention anything about it, the SA knew I got the MPE installed somewhere else. I still have about 2 years of warranty left.
I captured a cold start video this morning, will try to upload it later.

Sounds great. I would love to hear the cold start and exhaust now that it is burnt in.

No issues with warranty. Quite frankly, being a BMW part, any issues with it gets covered in your warranty (win-win situation actually).

I have to charge my gopro, can post an updated video by the weekend. Will upload the morning cold start video tomorrow, with some mild revving
Edit: The price I mentioned earlier does not include the tips, they are probably $100-150 for the new chrome ones, CF tips are around $500. I'd look in the classified section or get aftermarket tips which probably look better than the chrome OEM tips. In case you end up getting the MPE.
