What is keyless entry motion detection - and what cars have it?

I know some newer bmw and mercs employ a switch on the fob which can disable the keyless signals.

You just need to buy a faraday pouch for your keys, it doesn't help that only 20% of convicted car thieves go to jail either but the police gave up protecting private property years ago, so it's no wonder the scum think (and know) that they have a very good chance of getting away with it.

You'd think that with this known issue, that the manufacturers would employ fixes to stop this.

The keys should all be programmed to disable their signal with motion detection.

Or just stop with the keyless entry, how lazy have we become if we can't be bothered to press a button to unlock our cars

I believe that BMWs built from March 2018 do have keys which switch off when they haven't moved for a short time. These can be bought from BMW for earlier cars apparently.

Car gets stolen, insurers pay out, person buys another car. Sounds like it's on manufacturers' interests not to fix anything!

Any idea how to check the key? The build date for my 5 series was around then so could be either.

Leave the fob beside the car without moving it for 5 minutes (obviously stay in attendance) then try and open the car. If it opens you don't have motion detection. I have a feeling that the latest 5er's had this from launch but 3/4's only from around March '18.

Cheers

Lots being said that motion detection and faraday bags are a solution

Except that it doesn't in some scenarios

Lets say you park up in a supermarket carpark. Car locked and you walk towards supermarket, scumbag #1 follows you with his signal repeater or whatever he uses. scumbag #2 gets into car and starts it and waits until confirmation that you're in the supermarket, then drives off. At all times the key is active because you're walking with it in your pocket

Would you really put your key in a faraday bag in that scenario ?

Yes, motion detection works fine when you're parked at home

The best solution is to disable it, is it really such a chore to press a button ?

yeh, the real solution is not to spec CA in the first place - saves ££ and helps to stop getting your car pinched. What's not to like!?!

Interesting description next to the Land Rover Discovery : "Stolen in 20 seconds, but could not drive away.". How can you steal something that you can't remove ? (rhetorical).
